Prototype Railroading

Future of the railroad business

I'd like  to hear people's thoughts on the future of the railroad companies, as businesses. Does the future look like a long, slow decline or ever greater profitability? I'm interested in the business, rather that the future of the industry as an employer.

If you owned stock in a railroad business, do you think it's a good investment for the next ten years? Or is it likely to lag?

Gandy Dancer History

I have a question about switching street trackage with sharp curves on the industrial spurs.

My prototype had about a mile of street trackage through a 25’ or 30’ wide alley. There were spurs with tight curves making 90* turns into the industries buildings. The curves were close to trolley track radius. The line was built in the 1870’s. I know the Pennsylvania Railroad had electric tractors and the B&O used 0-4-0 locomotives for tight city industrial track.

Woodinville, WA MOW Shack 1/29 Build

Woodinville, Washington once was the hub of activity of the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern, followed by the Northern Pacific, Burlington Northern, BNSF, and finally the home of Eastside Freight Railroad (recently shut down as of August 2020).

Debating Trackage Rights or Merger for P&A Main/Erie Branch WAS: Verifying information on Erie Timetable - Mahoning Div

ORIGINAL POST:

I can't find an actual copy of an Erie RR Timetable for the Mahoning Division for anything around 1953, the year i'm modeling, but I found the information from one online here.

http://www.jon-n-bevliles.net/RAILROAD/Erie%20ETTs/maho-ett55.html

Is the information on the Oil City-Franklin Branch?  That there was no scheduled trains in either direction?  That trains on that branch were all extra's?

Update on Missouri-Illinois Railroad book - Shipping in 20 days

The new Missouri-Illinois Railroad book is shipping in 20 days.  The book has been several years in the making with interviews, help from former employees, hundreds of hours typing, research, scanning images and trips to Missouri. The result is a 374 page hardbound book with over 700 photos and images. Working with our editor and the art director we were able to reduce the page count by 8 pages which brought our cost down allowing us to reduce the price of the book.

Overview of the book and a few photos

Soybeans in containers

A picture in the august Trains showed a train of containers on the way to be loaded with soybeans.

How are the soybeans packaged to go into the containers?  Not loose like the old boxcar method i'm sure.

thanks

Forge

The prototype im modeling has a very large facility identified as a forge. My question is, what is the difference between forge and a steel mill? And what kind of loads does it receive?
