Scenery and structures

Forced perspective within a large structure

I'm familiar with using structures, people, vehicles, etc. of, say, the next smaller scale to help create the illusion of distance.

Just wondered if anyone has tried something like this within a structure - maybe a long warehouse heading away from a viewer. Not selective compression, but actually foreshortening the back wall somewhat and angling the side walls accordingly.

May be more work than its worth?

Simple grain elevator design

Rather than going traditional (wood, steel, or concrete grain elevator) people might consider a very simple grain bin elevator servicing a siding.  I was using Google maps going along the track paralleling Kansas Highway 96 just east of the Colorado border, when I saw this small elevator.

It would be easy to duplicate this with four bins (Rix, Walthers, etc) and two legs (Rix, Walthers, etc) or totally scratch build it.  Here is a concept drawing of the facility.

6 panel Door

Does anyone make a plastic HO scale 6 panel door? (3'-0"x6'-8")

I looked at Tichy and Grandt Line and don't see any.  Which seams odd as that is perhaps one of the two most common styles of door in the U.S..  (toss up between 6 and 4 panel)  so I would have expected them to be available.

Backdrop - Backed into a wall

I'm looking for some help with my backdrop.

In the next few weeks I'm hoping to get back into scenery work on my layout and in a couple of spots I have not left myself enough room between the tracks and the backdrop. I've got less than 2 inches in these locations.

Right now, there is 1/4" hardboard secured to the walls that is painted "sky blue" (I use that term loosely as we all have our own version).

Besides that there is a blank canvas to work with.

Thunder & Lightning Animation at Pittsburgh's Children's Hospital

Good day, all - I am currently working on a new train layout at Pittsburgh's Children's Hospital.  It is a professionally produced Harry Potter layout that is really spectacular.

There is a large castle at one end and I thought it would be appropriate for the children to press a button to active a few flashes of lightning and claps of thunder.

Hello,

Foil Tape corrugated siding?

Has anyone tried using the foil tape for furnace ducts as corrugated siding? I stuck some on a cardboard mock up today and ran a comb down it and it seems to have possibilities.Appears to stick pretty well and is easy to cut with scissors. Would need to figure out how to keep the corrugations straight and plumb as the siding is scribed and applied....DaveB

Applying surface cover for desert and canyon scenes.

Now that I've nearly resolved the plaster and base paint coat issues, I'm about ready to start applying things like sand, rock talus and sage brush on the slopes and horizontal area's.  I am working on some sage brush which I've already got some made, but will need to find some fine materials to cover some of the ground to lose that smooth look where there is a base coat of latex.  Suggestions and feedback for fixing things like that down would be very helpful.  TIA

Ideas for Replicating Cement Dust??

A key piece of modeling the cement industry (especially in the pre-environmental control era) is the ever present cement dust, that covered everything. I have thought of plaster powder or chalk.  Other ideas?
