Retarders for Plaster

I've tried adding baking powder to plaster when mixing but it still seems to start hardening within about 10 minutes or less making it difficult to work with.  My wife mentioned vinegar - will that work as well, or more effectively?

Speaking of Bridges - What are the minimum clearances?

Does anyone know what the minimum clearances were for local/rural roads when crossed by the railroad in the 1950s?

And is the NMRA Clearance of ~22 Scale feet the minimum clearance the railroads used for when being crossed by a bridge (road or railroad) ?  Or was the standard clearance taller for the early 1950s?

Thanks again.

Pre 1950 Concrete Plant

I am looking without much success on Google for plans and pictures of concrete mixing businesses built prior to 1950 when the all metal bunkers became the new norm.  Particularly I am looking for pictures of wooden rock bunkers that were used to store the aggregate stone and sand prior to mixing with cement to form concrete.

Lichen Preperation

I am running out of the commercial lichen I have acquired over the years.

I still need a lot of lichen for my 3D backdrop.

(detailed here http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/24749?page=5)

I live in MUskoka, so wild lichen is plentiful. I can just go for a walk and pick my own.

My question is how to prepare it....

I have read two sources, one mentions glycerin and the other says use matt medium. The matt medium would be a lot cheaper. Any one have thoughts on either method?

Need help deciding whether to Kitbash or Scratchbuild lost parts for a Walthers Kit

In a previous version of the P&A I had used a Walthers Trestle Kit  (Kit 933-3147) but only the trestle bents and I do not know what happened to the steel girder pieces.  I now would like to reuse the parts from this trestle on the Interim P&A and have it cross a road, so I need steel girders, but now can not find them!

Assembling Wathers Cornerstone Kits

I have a number of Walthers Cornerstone kits and wondering if anyone has any good tips for assembling the walls?  I seem to struggle with getting the walls to have a good strong connection between the pieces.

Pelle K. Soeborg's Concrete recepie

Can anyone tell me what Pelle K. Soeborg's Concrete recipie is? I know it includes Model Masters Gull Gray, Flat what and a sand color. What is his sand color?

current reviews of Static Grass Applicators?

So, I was just checking out my Scenic Express Father's day special email and noted that Noch, Heki and Grasstech were all on sale.

They also generally all talked about recent improvements to the products and they each have a slightly different design.

It made me wonder has there been a recent review of the current models of these products? Preferably on MRH, but I'd take anywhere.

Google, both generally and the site search suggest not. Lots of threads on making your own. Which is great, but I'm curious on the commercial products.

Oil industry siding?

Does anyone have any images for what a prototypical oil industry siding would be? The area that im modelling takes a lot of tank cars (molton sulphur and oil products from what i can tell) in via an Esso facility. I can see the tank cars all neatly stacked in the local area in the yards, but the actual unloading facility is not accessible to google  streetview. And on the satellite view its very hard to see what there is in that location.

So im looking for suggestions of what to include scenery wise? Can anyone help?

Thanks!

HO Indusrtrial gang ways and ladders

Does anyone have a source for industrial gangways, ladders, and walkways.  Want to connect 3 grain bins with walkway access over the tops.  ALso, need ladders to attach to the exterior of the bins.  Tried E-Bay and several vendors in MRH to no avail.
