Scenery and structures

Sculptamold, Hydrocal, Plaster of Paris, Joint Compound? What to use over pink foam for mid-western "flat" scenery.

I need a durable and lightweight top coat over pink foam and plywood to capture midwestern scenery that is mostly flat with small hills, cuts, and fills. No rock castings are needed and workability in the future would be appealing vs. tearing scenery up and starting from scratch. Which would you recommend and why?

Tiny Rail

We are working on a model of the sawmill at Cass WV.  It had a bunch of push carts that ran around on very very small rails.  Looking at photos the rails where only a couple inches high.  Anyone know how to simulate this?

Spray Paint Roads

If you’ve been following along with my videos you may have noticed I have a strong focus on roads at the moment.

Knowlton Bridge

Especially for Tom O'Connell, I was going through a bunch of old slides knowing that I had taken a picture of the one-lane Knowlton Bridge bridge as we had discussed here so long ago and did find it, apparently the only one I took:

Decals for backdrops?

Hi all, I was thinking about the problems of adding photos to backdrops. If the whole thing including the sky is part of the photo it requires a very tall print and if one just prints the lower part with trees and structures and glues it onto a painted sky it requires a lot of trimming and blending to get a realistic look to the upper edge of the tree line, etc.  So I'm wondering if a backdrop decal could be printed to be applied to a painted sky?

120 VAC Ion Generator

I built the original design by Joe F. using a DC ion generator.  A friend wants to build one and he has an 120 VAC plug in Ion Generator from Electronic Goldmine.   Can it be used to build a grass machine?  if so it has only three wires coming from the generator.  One has a metal brush on it and other others apparently attach to the AC cord and plug set provided.  I don't know what to tell him.  Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Idea's for scrap yard

Now that  have my main yard track in place, I can start thinking about filling in some of the structures and details.  The photo below shows an area with a spur I would like to put in some sort of scrap yard to park a couple of gondola's for unloading or loading - not a lot of room for buildings there except maybe a small yard office building or shed and some fencing to surround the end of the spur.

The largest area is in the foreground between the fascia and the single track spur - probably about 5 inches between the spur and the yard lead thats behind it.

Need Help Finding Instructions For Atlas Kits

Greetings All!

For those who did not read my other thread asking about cars (thanks again for everyone who assisted, so far I have been lucky in identifying the rest of the collection of Cars!), I have purchased a very large HO Collection and am in the process of cataloging it.

Backdrop for my switching layout

After watching TMTV's series on painting backdrops with Chris Lyon, I gathered materials and gave it a shot.  For reference, my switching layout is N scale, five foot long by 18 inches wide, and the backdrop is 1/8" masonite that rises 12" above the foam.

Getting up close, you can see just how abstract it really is.

Die Cutter Machines or technology and 21 st Century Model Building

So anyone working with die cutter machines such as those by Silhouette, Cricket or KNK?

I have a Silhouette Portrait that I can cut up to 0.010 thick plastic on.

I have not used it much.  I have cut some stencils with it and used it for test cuts on plastic as well as cutting decorative shingles for a building (thick paper).
