Scenery and structures

Waay coool...
I'm in the process of building a cold storage facility. And I'm finding myself wondering what color to paint the sucker. My inclination is "white" (or maybe antique white). What other colors might have been used in the early 1950s? Apparently there was a bunch of war surplus aluminum paint available and the roof might have been a tar and gravel hot-mop job then covered with the aluminum paint (presumably to absorb less heat from the sun).
Any other thoughts?

Charlie

Trackside Paint
I'm assembling a Campbell Northern Water tower, and I'd like to paint it - but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what color. The only prototype pictures I've seen are in black and white, and the color is indeterminate to my eye. I've found one in Maine that was painted green, but that was a restoration, and I can't tell from the site if it was the original color.
Here's a great picture of it from http://www.nps.gov
HO scale brick sheet
Good afternoon. I've been searching for an accurate ho scale brick sheet, not interested in the printed or embosed products.
Holgate and Reynolds made one that was a bit small for ho, but was better than any others i could find. I guess H&R are out of business, though.
A forum mentioned Evergreen Scale Models as having a good brick sheet. I contacted Evergreen directly and they said they didn't make a brick sheet. they recommended H&R.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Stephen

Ratty looking spur tracks
I promised a photo of the spur track in Mill Bend I was attempting to buy in mud using Joe's zip texturuing process. So here it is.

southern california coastal cliffs-article help
Some years ago I crossed paths with an article on how to model southern california cliffs next to the ocean. I can't find it now. Specifically, where SP runs along the coast in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, the line is on top of or at the bottom of shaley clay cliffs that are heavily eroded. The article (as I remember) described a modeler's wonderful rendition of these. Any one know where the article was, or have ideas about techniques.
Ballasting yards
Sooner or later I will have to deal with ballast in my yard. While for mainline and sidings I have used Woodland Scenics Fine Gray ballast, I have yet to decide what to use on yard tracks.
I pretty much like how the Roseburg yard appears on Joe's Siskiyou Line layout. Anyone - maybe Joe :) - knows what did he used? I like the lazy look of yard track as opposed to well maintained mainlines, so I guess I can use fine ballast and brush it with lots of dirt powder mix (pigments + plaster) to simulate dirt accumulating between and on ties.
Any other suggestions?

Static Grass Applicator
(Please forgive the layout of this post, I have a hell of a time with this site getting images to simply align in the order I want. It may be a Firefox thing. You can find a more organized post here on my site).
I've been playing with scenery, and wanted to move my testing onto the static grass. The applicators seem the way to go, but I'd rather spend $200 with one of the advertisers here before buying a Noch version.
Thanks to this website that had a great break down of items to purchase, I got the parts, and started whipping my homemade version into shape.
The key, it seems, is the negative ion generator. I know some folks have had luck with a electronic fly swatter, but in the middle of winter they're kind of hard to find, so I went ahead and ordered one of these. As an added bonus, it is 12 volt.
First up was a rough approximation of the tutorial.
I realized after beginning construction that the shape isn't relevant to the function (or at least I believe). What is important is that the wiring is sound. The package is in some degree not material as long as the grass passes through the screen that is receiving the charge.
Based on that, and that I was having a hard time getting the two parts above to adhere, I went with a simpler model. It is smoked almond container, with the screen not glued in, but just pinned by the cap and the top of the jar. I liked the thicker plastic, and duct tape seemed to hold the electonics pretty securely.
This ion generator is from the automotive world, and is 12 volt, which is the same voltage i realized as my MRC 12 volt powerpack. I have that powerpack on a toggle switch so I can go between DC and DCC on my layout; I figured why bother with another power source? The Red and Black alligator clips attach to any rail section, the green is for the ground. I just clip them on and fire up the powerpack to 80/90%.
Telegraph Poles
I have just purchased some of the new Rapido telegraph poles with interconnecting wires. I plan to place them along the track but what happens to the wires when the track goes into a tunnel?

Suggestions on modeling rocks
I'm starting to do some more scenery on my layout. I have started the backdrop and a couple of mountains. I also did some rocks that to me don't look to good ,Anyone here have any suggestions on what I should to to them?

weathering wood
I am constructing a coal tipple from bass wood and I would like to weather the wood before beginning. The kit instructions says to apply a "gray wash" followed by a "black wash". Unfortunetly i dont know what a "wash" is. I would greatly appreciate some advice. I want to achieve the look of an older building that is stillactive in the coal industry.
Thanks !
