Scenery and structures

Kitbashed Structures by Ocalicreek (was a Craftsman Kit thread)

Here are a few images of previous projects I've worked on.  Specifically, the emphasis was on taking a basic plastic kit or kits, kitbashing them, and or upgrading them towards a 'craftsman kit' standard.  Not that I have acheived this, but I press on toward the goal!

Scenic treatment of ceiling support column in benchwork.

A 6" square plaster-boarded support column or post rises through my benchwork, separating a three track main line from a freight yard in a very urban industrial area.  At the moment, it has undergone the same treatment as the backdrop:  painted white at horizon fading to sky blue toward the ceiling.

Replacement for Holgate & Reynolds brick sheet??

All; I was wondering if anyone out there knows of a good replacement for H&R brick sheets, I used to use them to create what we used to call "depression brick" it was like roll roofing with a brick pattern. The Soo used it to cover all of their stations on the Ashland sub anyway.

Ray & Rene Grossler had a great HO layout, The Nostalgia Trip, a great HO scale layout they used to haul around to shows. Rene scratchbuilt many of the buildings. She was the one that came up with the technique. It used H&R brick sheets, but I can't find it anymore.

Need help with ballasting issues and woes

Ballasting trackwork is an area of weakness for me.  I've begun ballasting the track on my layout recently.  It's HO scale on masonite splines with styrofoam terrain covered with plaster cloth and Joe's plaster vermiculite mix.  I'm using woodland scenics medium ballast, and wetting it with 70% isopropryl alcohol, and glueing it down with a 3/1 glue/water mix with a trace of dish detergent.

Pepper Grass

Does anyone know where to find Pepper Grass (sometimes called Candy Tuft)?  I went to my local Micahels and they'd never heard of it.  Same thing at Hobby Lobby.  The closest thing they had was something called "Stardust Gyp".  Is that the same thing?  Has anyone found stores that carry it or knows of a place that sells Pepper grass online?

Thanks,

Bill

Realistic Sage Brush

Recently I've been working on my layout scenery between Grass Lake and Black Butte (SP Shasta Route).  I'm trying to figure out how to represent sage brush, or what I call sage brush.  The bush in question is colored similar to artemesia tridentia (big sage) represented by this photo.

Thinning Enamel Paints

Hi all-

I'm experimenting with some track weathering techniques and one of the things I'm experimenting with is with washes of enamel paints.  I have been using turpenoid OMS  to thin the paint, but I find that the paint is taking a LONG time to try between each application of the wash.

Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative method of thinning enamels that speeds up the drying process?  I know it's going to be a longer time than an acrylic regardless, but anything that can cut the time down at all I would be interested to hear.

Ordering 12VDC Negative ION Generators

Guys,

I am about to order some 12 volt ION generators for the DIY static grass applicators.  If they are ordered one at a time I figure them to coast about $21 US each after shipping.  If I order them in multiples they start to come down in price due to combined shipping charges..

I thought I would put the offer out to combine orders and bring the price down for all.

If anyone is interested let me know and I'll up my order accordingly and pass on the savings.  The more I order at a time the cheaper they will get.

Tree question

This is probably for Joe and Charlie...What size is the raw material you guys are using for your foreground trees?  Specifically, Joe, at Slater Creek.  The two on the left and the one on the right:

It's hard to tell, but are they 1" dowels or what?  How high up do they go?  How big are the pieces of furnace filter (if that's what was used) for the branch structure?
