Temporary Stucture Lighting - for shows or photography

I am fortunate enough to be employed by an institution of higher education, where we have some clever students. One of them is currently working on a project that includes LEDs and batteries.

The project involves an LED, a lithum battery, tape, and rare earth magnets. Basically the battery drives the LED for up to a couple of weeks, held together with nothing more than packing tape (the magnets are for throwing - something not needed here). Here's a link to the LED Throwies she's making

scratchbuild plans...

Anyone out there ever scratchbuild a bridge similar to this?  I believe this was a Milwaukee Road branchline, between Logan and Churchill, Montana.  There are three of these bridges within a mile and a half or so, all in varying degrees of decomposition.  This one is in the best shape...

Sanding styrene (Moffat tunnel west portal pictures)

Dear forum, I got some styrene pieces from a laser cutting company today. It's the moffat tunnel west portal. I need to sand some of the edges because the heat from the laser made the styrene melt a little. What do you guys recommend using to sand the edges? We are talking very little sanding now. The reason I ask is because I do not want to scratch the surface of the styrene.

Distance from CL track to depot

I am planning to build a depot on my O-scale module and was wandering how many feet in the real world a depot would normally be put from the CL(centerline) of the nearest track?

My Static Grass Applicator Project

The project is coming along nicely.  The "chassis" is built and I am quite pleased with how it is coming together.  I'm going to put the finishing touches on the cover screen for the flock jar today and start the wiring.

I thought I had some static grass in stock already but all I can find is Woodland Scenics Field Grass.

Is the field grass going to be at all useful in testing the applicator or do I need to patronize the LHS to get some?

Found a new source for a 12V Negative ION Generator!

Hey! We just discovered a new source for the 12V negative ION Generator here!

If someone will order one of these and build a static applicator and tell us how it went for you, we'll make it worth your while!

Just use the Contact us link and select Other.

Does anybody remember this RMC contributor?

There was an author who wrote many scenery articles for RMC

back in the late 1970's to early 1980's, and his work got a lot of

cover shots on many RMC issues. He modeled SP Tehachapi Loop

scenes, and used to model tall California golden grasses rather convincingly

for the time. What was this author's name, and is he still in the hobby?

Like Joe Fugate, this modeler used photographs of actual scenes, and this

is why his work was a step above the rest.

Thanks in advance!

Asparagus fern to simulate pine trees?

I seem to recall Campbell Scale Models offering pine tree kits that

included Asparagus Fern to simulate the branches and needles.

Although, if you search Google, it seems that there are different species of

this type of fern. The other type looks like pipe-cleaners, whereas the type

I've included has nice pine-needle detail. Also, Campbell included several tapered dowells

that were stained, and pre-drilled that you would insert the Asparagus Fern branches into.

Static Grass Applicator - ION Generator

FYI

The Electronic Goldmine has the 120V Negative ION Generator on sale right now for $3.95, regular $10.95.

I just realized that the 12V model, featured in Joe's How-To video, is no longer available and apparently discontinued as I learned from the Model Trains Video site last night.
