Scenery and structures
It's Friday and I haven't done much of anything
It's 9:45 AM on Friday, 9/12/2008 and i haven't done any work on my layout room except try to find a good way to make convincing clouds on my blue painted layout room's walls. I've gone thru alot of stuff and still no definitive answer despite the volumes of books, magazine articles and even posts that I've read. I am sure there are others who've come to similar impasses with different aspect s of producing a nice looking and workable layout. So what have you done to get the creative juices flowing when you are not really into being creative at the moment?

Shaping pink foam
My LDE doesn't show any arroyo or creek, but to eliminate a real long single track mainline in N scale for around 6', I added a small arroyo. A small deck trestle over it and what a change. I used a razor saw and the hot wire, but spraying dullcote or any kind of paint attacks the foam and gives you great cuts in the foam, natural looking.
Rotary dumper
About 5 years ago I built a rotary dumper from the Walthers kit. Static kits are quite boring so I animated it with parts from my parents' VCR, a piece of Burger King display I bought from a homeless guy, gears that I was told were from an EKG machine, some scrap plexiglas from work and two switches out of my car stereo. As to how do it, I can't say. Projects like this are a matter of deciding what needs to do what and making them do it. If a shaft needs to turn, put a gear and a motor on it. Anyway here is a video from a couple y

Calling Ken Larsen, how'd you model the water?

Making scenery base of papier-mache, good or bad?
I wonder what you guys think of this idea? I will try to use papier-mache for scenery base. I will use water and newspaper cut in small pieces and mixed with a food mixer to a fine mass. Add wallpaper glue, mix it again with the food mixer and use it on top of masking tape like Joe's vermiculite mix. Then I will paint it in a tan color and use Joes zip texture method and all other tricks that Joe have in his bag :-)
It's one of the cheapest options. The result is a durable, light structure that can take some nocks.
How to removing parts that where CA'ed to trestle
Hi,
I need to fix a trestle I've been building. The hand rails were put on incorrectly on the bridge.
What is the best way to remove the CA and handrail without destroying the bridge?
