Scenery and structures
Joe's Mud
I have made my first applications of Joe's Mud scenery and I am very pleased with the results. Instead of doing all the landforms first I have opted on sequencing techniques learned from years of project management. As I progress from right to left in approximately two to three foot segments, I have: open benchwork with roadbed, cardboard strip landforms, taped skin, painted skin, bare curing mud, painted mud, soil and turf. I start each work session by adding more cardboard strip landforms then progress to each step as time and material on hand allows.
Substitute for Powdered Tempora
I am having difficulty finding powdered Tempora paints for coloring my plaster mix scenery base. My local craft store says they can no longer get it due to being deemed an inhalation hazard. They do have liquid Tempora, however. Has anyone tried the liquid variety in the plaster mix? Or, are there any other substitues that can be used in place of the powdered Tempora?

Plaster of Paris
Man...this stuff sets up FAST! I've got most of the structure made from foam but there are parts that I need to use some kind of filler. Is there a better substance that is easier to work with? I love the fact that Plaster of Paris carves easy and is very solid at 1/4 inch thick but you can only work with about a cup at a time. It is heavy though. Thoughts??

Daylighting a tunnel
edit: added post categories
It was suggested on another thread that a daylit tunnel is a good modeling possibility. So, here are some shots of BNSF's tunnel daylighting in Cajon pass.
The first shot is the "before". The fifth one is from the same location a bit later.
Backdrop Software
I'm in a rush because company just arrived but I saw this today and...first impression was WOW! Check it out if you like and let me know what you think.

Modeling Adhesives Types and uses White Glue-PVA-Aliphatic Resin-Alpha Cyanoacrylates-....ect
First Let me give all the credit for this Information to The Model Railroad Craftsman Magazine Sept 2008.
This was in a Special Supplement in the center section of the Sept. 2008 Edition called The Laser Guide - in the tool box Quick Tips section and it's a shortened version and isn't copied word for word Just the main differences in glues as they described them.

Matte Medium vs PVA White Glue
OK guys I have run into a small dilemma, on another forum, I posted a thread about my use of matte medium as the bonding agent for my ballasting. One reply to that post claimed that MM when set was "as hard as CA" , made removing the track and ballast at a later date without damage near impossible and glued the turnounts to inoperability. I have never had any real problems with MM and I prefer it because it doesn't leave a waxy sheen on the ballast. So I am asking what are your opinions and pros and cons about the two adhesives

Craftsman Structure Show 2009
Sitting in the Boston airport, returning to Portland, OR from the Craftsman Structure Show here in the Boston Area. CSS is put on primarily by one of our sponsors, the Scotty Mason Show (monthly model railroading podcast). This show was a total blast - some of the best modelers on the planet, I think. Check out the HO photo below - this is representative of the quality of modeling we saw throughout the show:

How do you prepare the plastic model for painting
I've just starting using water-based paints instead of my old standard: Floquil. From all I've read concerning acrylics, there is great emphasis on washing in detergent and water. (I've usually used solvent alcohol to remove oils.) My concern is not so much with solid structures like buildings, but with fragile structures like bridges and towers: anything that is more truss than solid surface. I'm getting quite a line of projects on my shelf, that need paint.
Working with foam
Hello all,
First real layout here. I've got insulation foam down on the benchwork as one layer (1 1/2 inch). Then I'll build up/down from there. Couple of questions working with this stuff:
1. It's easy enough to carve with a good blade, but how do you smooth it out? I'm trying sandpaper and that seems to do the trick (320 grit) unless I'm missing something. The dust is horrible.
2. What glue are you guys using to adhear it to the other foam?
3. Will Plaster of Paris stick to the foam without peeling off?
