Scenery and structures

What color should I use for my fasica?

Good Day Everyone,

I am currently building my layout (CNR in the 50's) and I am having a difficult time picking out a color for my fascia. I am leaning towards black based on the premise that it gives enough contrast to make the scenery stand out. What are your thoughts and what have you used on your own layout?

Lastly, do you recommend painting the fascia before or after the scenery is complete? Or does it not matter?

Thanks,

Colin

Drips on the fascia

I was just watching how Joe built and installed the bridge at 10 Mile Creek and noticed that there appeared to some drips on the green fascia t the front after he installed the Envirotex and removed the masking tape dam he installed. I also noticed that in latter parts of this section on the DVD the fascia seems to cover the edge of the creek. Was this a new fascia or just a touch up of the old with green painted to hide the water?

Painting concrete

So do you guys have any good ideas for painting concrete?  Roads, building foundations, buildings, coal loadout silos, bridge abutments, bridges, it is all around us but I haven't figured out how to do it yet.  It always looks painted.  Looking forward to hearing how you do it.

Here is a photo of the Skyline loadout in UT:  http://geology.utah.gov/utahgeo/energy/coal/coaltour/mines/images/large/skyline8.jpg

WS Realistic Water Q

The 'structions on the side of the Woodland Scenics Realistic Water package state that it should be poured in depths of no more than 1/8" at a time and that no more than 3 layers (i.e. 3/8" total) should be poured.

I've only ever used it in small amounts in gulleys and ditches.

Anybody ever used more than 3/8"?

What happened?

Did the world end?

I am dying to know...

modeling with paper and card stock

Hi all, As one of the owners and the chief designer at Clever models, i am always interested in modelers views of craftsman structures that feature card and paper construction. I invite everyone to express their ideas here.

know that your ideas are going to someone who can make them into reality. of course just lots of BS is always welcome as well.

Dirt Powder Question

Joe,

In the Basic landscape video you talk about your dirt mixtures that contain a mixture of colored powders and plaster.  What exactly are the powders?  Paint powder or something?  I'm heading to a hobby lobby tomorrow to check out their art supply area and I"m hoping to pick up a few things so I can do some terrain work this weekend.  The painting backdrop and terrain video have realy inspired some ideas for me.

Thanks!

Also, what material would you use?

Thanks

Final thickness of Envirotex

Hi,

I am curious about how deep my envirotex will end up being after a couple of pours, and whether my plan is going to be sufficent to the need. This is what I am doing...

I am in the process of putting in a 1/4" plywood base for the envirotex water scene I intend to have on my layout. The bridge, abutment, and vegetation is to be patterened after this photo:

To Droop or not to Droop?

As I was driving to work this morning I was looking at the phone poles and see for the umpteenth time the nice catenary droop of the wires between the poles.

The wires always have a droop, some times obvious and sometimes really obvious.

I've seen pictures of people who modeled the wiring on the poles but the wires were always straight lines which seemed kind of strange to me.

So (drum roll please), what's the best way to model utility poles (and wires attached thereto)?

Good size for spray booth? Backdraft, Downdraft?

Hi,

With the imminent depature of summer, I have finally been authorized to purchase the fan I need to build a Frugal Yankee spray booth for my basement workshop. I will be using a Dayton squirrel cage blower with an externally mounted AC motor similar to the one used in many commercial blowers. I plan to use laminated particle board which should be easy cleanup for water base paints. I dont use much in the way of solvent paints.
