Round house ballast or zip texturing?

Hi folks,

I have been using Joes method for zip texturing and I really like it because its 100% repeatable.

Now I am still working on the benchwork stage of the railroad at this point but I am starting with an engine terminal just getting things placed where I want to build them.

And still waiting on my Fast tracks order =)

I have seen people build roundhouses and just use cinder ballast for the whole area and things just look to black to me.

I realize you can add weeds dust etc, but I want to accomplish a certain look.

It's what's on the inside that counts....

I have been plugging away at the interior of Tum-A-Lum lumber company. This structure will be at the foreground of my layout and will feature a Hardware store and lumber yard. Since they will both be within inches of the edge of the layout I have decided to spend the time and super detail the building both for the visual appeal and the challenge the project will bring. Currently I have been focusing on the hardware side of the building and once complete I will tackle the rest of the building.

Here is an overview of the building

Fresh from the workbench...

Hi friends,

today an update on the engine shed (Pikestuff) and the tool shed (BLMA).

Afther the basecoat (Tamiya neutral grey FX-53) and final coat (Tamiya Sky XF-21) I brushpainted the details,... doors, downspouts etc. etc., with acrylics from model color (fast on the drying and easy to bring on).

Winter deciduous trees?

I am looking for a way to make deciduous trees without leaves; okay, maybe a few stickers, like I often see on Oak trees in the winter.

Does "Chapter 14: From the ground up - realistic deciduous trees made fast" from the "Model Railroad Volume 5 - Scenery & bridges - pt 2" DVD cover the winter version?

Is there a previous thread that talked about trees in winter?

Should I wait to acquire the needed photos for the backdrop to build a scene?

I would like to build the scene this bridge will be in, but it will be at least a year before I am able to go out to take photos of the Allegheny River which this bridge will cross near Franklin, PA (which is north enough as to not block any navigable channel in the river).  The photo backdrop is important as it is the best way to have the river go "into" the backdrop as I am not a good enough painter to make the scene believable.  Has anyone built the scenery to up to a few inches of the backdrop and later inserted the backdrop photo and then matched everything up?&nbsp

This week on the H's&T's....and the workbench...

Hi friends,

this week I'v been working some on the sandtower for the small diesel maintenance area. It's already in place on the layout infact. (couldn't wait,  héhé).  American Ltd. made kit with the usual painting, weathering, drybrushing.....

Ground Goop - who uses it?

Guys (and Gals),

I finally mixed my first batch of Lou Sassi's Ground Goop.  I actually did a double portion, to give it a go and see how I like scenicking with it.  I've read Lou's Basic Scenery for Model Railroaders many times and I think his methods are interesting and his great results attainable, even for a scenery "noob" like me.

Need ideas for recreating trackage for backdrop

There are a few scenes where there will be trackage crossing over the mainline perpendicular to the aisle and backdrop, and therefore the track will end up going into the backdrop.   And in addition, some of these scenes will be attempts to recreate what it looked like in 1953.  The problem is many of the locations that had trackage, no longer does.  Though the right of way is somewhat visible, the trackage has been ripped out and the right of way has deteriorated.  So my question is, how does one recreate these scenes so the trackage appears to continue once t
