India Ink Washes

I am reading a Lance Mindheim book which is telling me the use of India ink washes is one of the best techniques to learn. He mixes it with alcohol. However, no where in his text does he say whether to use the waterproof or non-waterproof version.

Does anyone know which one to use?

Thanks

N scale Farm structures

I figure I will just throw this out there and see what kind of response I get. I will be building a farming scene (in N scale) and want to know of any available kits out there for a barn, a farm house and any other out-buildings, etc., that people know about. There are some standard kits out there, but recent posts and MRH articles showed me that there might be kits or manufacturers out there that I haven't even heard of. The era is 70s/80s as well, so I'm not really interested in anything that would have been built in the last 25-30 years.

Making your own washes

Looking for some advice on how to make washes using latex or water based paint as the base. Can anyone suggest what sort of proportions they have used? Started by taking a 3:1 ratio of water to paint, but the paint was still too viscous to be considered a wash and the results were plaster rock molds that appeared to be painted, with little color variation. Added some old washes that I had based on Woodland Scenics wash to improve them. Hoping that someone will have some advice and experience as WS washes are way to expensive to do a large layout.

Waterfront Railroading wanted !!!!

The subject line says it all. I am looking for examples, ideas, tips, tricks, PHOTOS, etc of waterfront railroading. I will be modeling the Western Maryland in Baltimore, MD circa 1943.(But please don't limit your posts to that era or locale).  Anything you have or know of post on here. Trying to get some brainstorming ideas. Also looking at scratchbuilding or kitbashing some HO scale ships (naval or merchant), so ship building ideas are especially accepted.

Thanks in advance

Vehicles on your layout

I just bought a number of cars and trucks for my layout and have a couple of questions. I am going to need a lot of cars and trucks.

Do you weather your vehicles? If so how without messing up the windows?

Work in progress, new tree line...(part2)

Hi all,

still re working my tree line, even added a red beech tree to get some variation in color. I'll be adding some more trees in the coming weeks, but first I am going to let sink in this new setting. Tree lines is give and take, that's why I am going in small steps and building it all up. ("every day I'm shoveling",lol)

Modeling a Shell gas station circa 1968

I have been working on modifying and updating a Scale Structures 1940's Gas Station to represent a gas station more in tune with the year I model, 1968. I modified the front of the building, changed the doors and will do some more updating to the exterior. I have also been using the internet as a modeling tool borrowing images and using them to tell the story of my gas station. I have a long way to go before I am done, but I am moving right along.
