How much selective compression for Bridges is acceptable?

The proto-freelanced Pennsylvania & Allegheny RR crosses the Allegheny River at Franklin, PA.  At the angle the bridge needs to cross the river results in a length of over 1100'.  That would be over 11 1/2 long!

Vermiculite

Joe, or anyone who has done so, do you still mix vermiculite with plaster when you plan on carving rocks?

Thanks,

Gary

Painting Clouds

Does anyone have any recommended tips on painting clouds on a backdrop?  I'm not an artist so I'm looking for something easy.

We don't need to build no stinkin' scenery!

What if you don;t want to build any scenery at all? Or what if you want to change the scenery on your layout routinely? Or if, like me, you want to try out scenic treatments before you build them?  Can this be done?

I ran some experiments with 'green screens' the way the Hollywood studios do and I believe that the answer is yes.

You can see the video results on my blog here:

Blending Photo-backdrop with 3D Scenery for River

There will be a few places where a river will enter into the backdrop.  For those scenes, I plan on using a photo-backdrop (either from commercially available products, or from photos I will take of the actual river I am modeling, photo-shopped and printed at Kinkos or similar places).  My only concern is how to blend the photo along the river's edge.  The main river I am modeling is the Allegheny River, and the locations I am modeling has the water very smooth, so I don't see how I can use a kind of ridge to hide the seam.  Any ideas?  Is there a way to

Photo Backdrops

I hope that I am posting this to the right place as I am new to MRH.  I have made a how-to video on creating Photo Backdrops.  This is the first of a two-video set.  You can view this video on my blog here:

Tall maple trees?

I'm modeling eastern canada and need some good models of tall maples. I bought a box of supertrees but the best ones only topped out at a scale 60 or so feet in ho. I need a few in the 70-100 foot range which is more typical of fully grown maples in the northeast. I've shopped around online but no luck finding any ready made. Does anyone have experience making these? I'm wondering if I just need to get lucky with another box of supertrees.

Weathering Tips?

Hey all – need some weathering tips please

At this point I’ve been weathering with chalk and I’ve had pretty good results.  I’m having a few issues and wanted to share what I’ve been doing and seek some advice.

I’m modeling HO and modern cars.  Most of the cars are Atlas, Accurail, and Walthers, but I have several Athearn box kits from years ago I’m getting into – these make for good weathering candidates.
