Track and electrical/DCC

N-Trak and DCC Programming

I'm building a 4-foot N-Trak module and I'd like to use the branchline track as a DCC programming track besides the usual N-Trak layouts. What kind of wiring/switches would I need to switch between "Normal" N-Trak operation and a dedicated programming track using my iMac and JMRI?

Help Needed - Arduino - Stepper Motor from Elegoo

Not directly train related, but I'm attempting to learn about using stepper motors with Arduino Uno (and later, Nano) to control animation or turnouts. The steppers that I have from Elegoo are 5v and the only on-hand power supply is 5.2v. Will I burn out the steppers with that?

Please help this NOOB!

Loksound Warranty Return --> Germany: Shipping pain?

Dear MRHers,

Questions:
- Anyone have had to ship a damaged/DOA Loksound decoder back to Germany for Warranty Repair?

- Anyone had Deutsche Post/Deutsche Customs/ESU collectively fail to deliver/receive/accept said warranty-repair decoder? (thankfully it has made it back home, so at least I know where the damaged unit is)

As far as I can tell, DE Customs held a correctly-addressed, insured, and Intl-Tracking-Enabled parcel labelled "Warranty Repair - No Commercial Value",
(IE no duties or tax to pay AFAIK),

cheap circuits, anyone?

The components to build a grade crossing flasher circuit are certainly cheap. The problem is I really hate building circuits. Is anyone aware of appropriate 555 type circuits for sale on eBay? You know, the ones where you get like 400 of them for like a dollar (sarcasm, okay?)

If they already exist in PCB form, I would prefer not spending an equal amount in components just to get the job of assembling them.

Wiring a smoke unit

Hi guys,

I have a friend who has a MTH Challenger that the sound decoder has gone out on. After repeated tries to get service out of MTH, he has thrown up his hands and told me to put Soundtraxx in it.

spectrum steam dcc

Just recently bout a used Spectrum steam DCC loco, however the chuffing speed does not match the loco actual speed...throttle at 28 sound matches, but actual speed is slower...I use NCE and have never programed sounds speed etc..Any assist or advice always appreciated.

Double-Crossover Dissection, and particularly Shinohara

I realize a lot has been written about this subject of double crossovers, but as I was going back thru some of the posted subject discussions on various forums I was getting confused by some of the great variety of opinions and facts. I thought I might extract some of these various postings and solutions offered into this subject thread in hopes of LEARNING and REMEMBERING the best of the ideas presented. So please excuse my 'duplication' in this subject.

Handlaid Turnouts -- Ties, how to color?

I have built a few hand-laid turnouts that work very well, using PCB ties and MicroEngineering Code 83 rail. THe plan is to add the MT. Albert Scale Lumber ties next.

What's the best way to go about coloring the ties? I have heard people talk about stain, which is pretty easy to do. And should I do it BEFORE I glue them to the underside of the rails, or after? Knowing how impermeable BARGE cement is, it seems like I'd need to stain them all BEFORE gluing, otherwise the stain will not penetrate the areas with glue.

Textured stone spray

So,

You guys remember my buddy and his layout, right? Well, he finally tore the first attempt apart and has started on another one. This one is turning out much better ! He listened to a few kernels of knowledge and experience and it is starting to look pretty good.
