O Scale PC Board ties vs wood ties thickness

I plan on using Fast Tracks jigs to build the O Scale turnouts needed for the local model railroad club's layout.  As I look at the products available, there are scale O Scale Wood ties of the proper "thickness" but the PC Board ties are significantly thinner.  Any thoughts on how to shim underneath the PC Board ties easily.  I have some ideas but am concerned they A) will not properly support the turnout while sitting on the roadbed or B) will be so grotesque in terms of appearance that they will not work either.

Thanks.

Track planning on iPad?

Does anyone know if there are any track/layout planning apps for the iPad?

Speakers in early Athern Diesels

I have a number of older Athearn diesel locos that I have fitted with DCC. I now want to equip some with a generic type sound unit and don't know too much about the sound side of things. Looking at the manufacturer's data it seems to me that most suitable units come with an un-baffled  28mm speaker. I'm fairly certain I will have trouble getting a 28mm speaker in my locos especially if I need to make a baffle for it and it looks like I may need to buy a replacement speaker at the same time.

DCC wiring question...

I heard that the Bus line wire should be 18 gauge. That's like lamp cord wire. Is that right?

What's a great idiot's guide to DCC?

I have the Carsten's book on DCC on order right now but I'm wondering if there's any other good overall guides to DCC for someone who knows nothing about it.

Blue flag (light) protection

I decided to put some blue lights on the shop tracks for blue flag protection. They turned out ultra bright, not because of the resistor used, but that's the kind of led's that they are. I may tame them down at some point, but not today. Kyle

need help in wiring reversing loops in DCC.

Hi all.

Well I have my layout plan and am working on building it now. But I need some help in wiring my reversing loops for DCC as DCC is all new to me. If you look at the plan, it is one big loop. At each end of the loop is a section that will allow you to reverse direction on the loop. So I need some help in figuring out how do I wire it, where do i but in isolation rail jointers, and do I use a auto reverse circuit or a simple power reversing switch. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Stationary sound via hi-fi system

Hi all,

I have looked at equipping some of my engines with sound and have more then a few concerns, listed below:

1/ Cost, the conversion from a Digitrax decoder to a sound decoder either Digitrax or MRC will add about £50 per unit.
2/ Difficulty of the install in N scale, fiddly, accident prone...
3/ And mostly, sound quality is really poor, tinny thin unrealistic sound which is more distracting and annoying then a good upgrade.

So reading around I came across the following idea and I am interested in opinions.

Decoder Installation in N scale

Does any of the advertisers here install decoders on N scale engines ? I have an Atlas GP40 that I would like to convert it into DCC. Any one recommends anybody ??

Thanks in advance
