Working "air" brakes?

As I mentioned in another post, I have an idea for working train brakes on a model railroad.  To be really effective, it would be good to have an engine that can free-wheel and a DCC system that can handle dynamic braking and other such things, but that's another topic..

Three Decks or Two, that is the question

As I approach beginning construction of the Interim P&A Layout on October 1 of this year, I am rethinking whether there should be 3 Decks or 2 Decks.  Here are the Pros and Cons for each design"

Pro For 3 Decks:

Additional 150' of Mainline run
Additional 3 towns with businesses and industries to serve

Cons for 3 Decks:

Deck Separation (bottom of upper deck to top of lower deck) will be between 6"-12"
Requires lower deck to be at 33"

Design for a track layout

I am building an HO scale layout with DCC.  I am providing a layout of what I get to work with.  My problem, is still stuck on the drawing board.  I can't seem to get a place to start.  I have a list of what I would like on the layout, but that is it.  Can anyone help in designing a layout for me?

Design idea for a logging/mining layout

Hey everyone,
It's been a long time since I have posted.
But good news... I have acquired a new area to build a layout. The room will be approximately 14'x15', with a 3'x20' staging/reverse loop area.  I have yet to even stud out the walls, so I have a long way to go before running trains.:D

What to model & what to leave out?

I recently moved, and in so doing I now have a 16 x 8 foot roofed and sided shed for a train room.  I am both excited and daunted with all the space I now have for trains.

My plan now is to model the Vermont Rail System point to point from Bellows Falls Vermont to Rutland.  I was thinking of doing a 2 foot shelf layout in a horseshoe,.

Switching Layout

It seems the question of "Need a good switching layout plan" seems to arise from time to time. There is a cool article about the Effingham RR in Trains mag that looks like would make a great switching layout.

Help with Layout Design - Ideas?

I can't quite decide on my layout - I need some help

I'm currently using a fold up ping pong table to run some trains on - I'd like to stick with this due to space requirements

I've got a lot of equipment to run (Athearn Challenger, Bachmann Centennial, few other smaller locos) as well as lots of passenger coaches and lots of freight cars

I've already got a NCE Powercab and a heap of flex track, as well as alot of Hornby track (of a suitable radius for my Challenger and DD40AX)

Modern Scene/Industry?

I was entering my home town last evening (Waterbury Vermont, which is on the New England Central or former Central Vermont mainline) and my SO yelled TRAIN!

I pulled over, and checked it out.

For those of you who are not in the know, the NEC is replacing most of it's northern mainline with single heavy duty welded rail, a process that's quite fascinating.

What I observed here though, was something that may be of use to modern modelers who are looking for a small scene or industry.

Thinking Outside the Box - Nolix Design

I've been planning a double deck layout with a helix for some time now.  I've heard about how a helix is a pain and it takes up alot of space, but I really didn't think a nolix was right for me.  Two reasons for this were:
