Layout design

Hello all,

I am finally in a position to build a permanent layout after a wait of six years.

The problem is, I can't seem to come up with an N scale track plan I really like.

new layout perhaps

Hi folks,

Looking for some thoughts here -I am not a pro when it comes to make really neat layouts, but like to create.  Just seeking thoughts on this plan-the blue is the out of bounds area, but the white area is what you have to work with...your thoughts

Would it be something you would use to build a layout, if there was a chance you may move in the next 10-15yrs?

Elevation Help requested

Some observations operating a very large model railroad and it's impact on the Design of the "Ultimate P&A Layout"

Still very excited from the experience many hours ago, I would like to write down some observations I made from the Operating Session I was fortunate to participate in on a very large privately owned model railroad.

The First Dominoes

The First Dominoes are ready to be constructed.  I have come up with a design for a 12' x 2' section of my layout.  It will be constructed in two 6' sections.  This is a rural town and the industries and track arrangement are fairly accurate to the prototye with the exception of cutting it down from a double track to a single track main.  The layout will be 50" or 52" high.

SP Modeling in N-Scale - San Fernando to Lancaster

Hi folks,

I'm tinkering with several ideas for an N-Scale layout in a 2-car garage. My favorite area is that of Tehachapi, but I'm trying to scale-back my grandiose ideas for something more conventional - one that doesn't take up a huge footprint. I want the space to be equally comfortable to my guests as it would for me, so aisle space is at or will be greater than 42". Two decks, with the lower portion at 42", and the upper no higher than 65".

Designing what I hope to be my future layout

Hello fellow model railroaders.

I am in the midst of designing what I am hoping to be the layout I finally build when my children have finished college and there is more money available – I know the plight of the model railroading world!  I would like to have members look over the plan and give your comments, suggestions and opinions.  First allow me to list some layout particulars.

How much can I "trim" from NMRA Clearance Standard without getting into real trouble

As I begin to install the mounting strips for the shelf brackets, I run into a possible issue with track clearances.  Some of the ductwork for the house ventilation system is a bit lower than I thought I measured it was.  Therefore the clearance would be approximately 2.75".  I am modeling in HO Scale, circa 1950s.  The clearance standard is 3.03125" and there is no easy or simple way of lowering the benchwork or raising the ductwork without another MAJOR redesign which I do not want to have to do because I want to get the benchwork started NOW!

Is 2n + 1 overkill for staging?

2n+1 is a formula Tony Koester came up with, though not an actual formula, the ideas is in Layout Design, plan for the number of trains you think you will run and therefore need staging tracks for, double that number and add one, because one always seems to run out of staging.

Design advice needed (N scale, urban switching, freestanding, but shelf type)

I'm a widower (with all grown children) who will be moving someday.  Eventually, I hope to build a fairly substantial permanent railroad that balances passenger and freight service in the heavily traveled Northeast region.  This is my second attempt to get back into model railroading after decades of absence.  (First effort was a port-themed section of the larger vision designed professionally.
