Dream and design

How do you decide what to model?

Ok I'm having some issues here in deciding on how much of a town or towns to model and am looking for some input.

The narrow gauge years of the Austin and Northwestern Railroad

I want to model the early Austin and Northwestern Railroad (A&NW) because I live nearby.  This is a very condensed history, followed by a 1924 Southern Pacific schedule and a freight tonnage table.  The A&NW is a point-to-point railroad with long spurs that branch off the mainline to Burnet and to Granite Mountain and Marble Falls.

help finding resources for Texas railroads

Ok I need a little help here. I've decided on a new layout and am going to base it off of the Missouri, Kansas & Texas RR (KATY) and the Texas & Pacific RR. The era will be around the mid to late 30's. My main town is going to be Fort Worth, where I grew up, with the focal point being tower 55 where the two lines cross. I'll of coures have the stock yards in there, even though neither line serviced them, along with the T&P 360 degree roundhouse.

looking 4 someone who loves to draw trackplans

Good morning folks, By way of introduction I like to build models and would like to incorporate those into a working trackplan. I have no experience at this except for one seat of the pants build of an N scale layout.

I now would like to have a simple but yet well thought out HO trackplan for a logging to waterfront layout. Anyone willing to take some time and help further a plan would be most welcome. Thanks Pat

Newbie need some guidance! Take 2!

Good morning everyone,

After much time gathering, reading and digesting lots and lots of information (thanks to you all for pointing me in the right direction!), I have finally drafted another sketch (and hopefully better one) of what I'm planning to do, and yes, I took the whole year for that!!!  smiley

Modeling the US in HO. . .

I was curious as to what space would be needed to model the entire USA in HO and a few other railroading areas.

I came out with a few rough estimates:

USA: You would need a building 23 miles wide and 34.5 miles long.

Tehachapi Loop:  14 x 28 feet

UP Bailey Yard:  122 x 486 feet

It's amazing how we modelers can compress real life into such a relatively small space.

Traction Line going into a tunnel?

The premise for the O Scale Traction Line is it serves industries in the city and heads out into the countryside to reach a lake where the trolley's take passengers/tourists to this popular vacation spot in the Spring and Summer.

Unfortunately, with the reconfiguration we need to do to be in compliance with the fire code (a previously boarded up set of windows have been renovated and now have an emergency exit in them so we must have a 4' aisle with nothing in front of it at all times) part of this traction line must go into a tunnel.

New layout design advice/critique

I am working on design proposals for a new layout for a 'workshop' in our detached garage.  I have two basic designs to review for advice/critique.  I will present "Plan A" in this message thread.

Starting with John Armstrong's 'Givens/Druthers'.

Track location vs Scenery vs Buildings - a Layout Design Question

This question is about a design aspect I haven’t seen discussed much.

Question: to how much detail did you plan the location of scenic features (ie, rivers, canyons, etc) and structure placement before starting to cut roadbed for a mainline?

Trying to locate Joe Fugate's "Operating potential formula"....

I have old/broken links to Joe Fugate's www.siskiyou-railfan.net website that had his formulas for calculating a layouts 'operation potential'.  Does anyone have an URL/link to where these pages might be found?

Thanks.

Doug
