Track Plan Review

Greetings on a snowy Saturday! (In Wisconsin)

I've just made some modifications to the track plan of my Lake Country Railroad and would like your opinions.  I think I have annotaded the picture well, but please post any questions and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Thanks for looking.

Need inspiration!

I want to model an aggregates quarry but I need some information about railroad operations in a quarry and some ideas for a possible track plan. I am modeling modern era, H0 scale and my space is 2x9.

My idea is modeling the crusher/loader zone, I have the Walter's Glaciar gravel kit and some ballast hoppers.

Seeking input on yard design with intermodal

This is my first layout (HO). At this time I don't have much interest in operations but I want to plan for it in case my interests change as I learn more about the hobby. My yard will include an intermodal section which is where I have to make a choice; a shorter double-ended section with access from the main yard (Example 1 in the attached PDF), a longer single-ended section (Example 2) or a medium-length double-ended but with no access to the main yard (Example 3). The parallel tracks in the main yard are about 8'. The intermodal section in Example 1 is about 4' long.

How long

How long do people spend working out their track plans .. I originally had an idea of what I wanted to do about 4 months ago .. but so far all the ideas I've put down on paper have to be changed when I've looked at how it might fit in the space I've got. I've looked at plans online and in magazines trying to get some ideas but when I put them down on paper either they don't fit or they just don't look right.

Virginian and Lake Erie's picture

Back ground info on prototype area.

I am looking for some maps that show trackage in Wheeling, Wv. Railroads involved were the Wheeling and Lake Erie, Pennsylvania, and the Baltimore and Ohio. If anyone has something they can post here either map or a link I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Are S-turns inevitable in yards?

I am in the process of designing my first yard. Seems like every yard I've seen so far has at least one part with end-to-end turnouts, forming an S-turn. I see it mostly in the first rung of a ladder and in sidings. Is this OK in these circumstances? If I insert the suggested 12" of straight section between left & right turns then the parallel tracks are too far apart. I'm using #5 turnouts. Thanks for any advice.

Hat River Railroad

I've got a layout in my mind that I will be translating into reality as soon as I can.

P&PRR - modular n shelf layout

Hello, all.  New to this forum, though I've been enjoying the magazine very much for the past couple years.  Got so wrapped up in the magazine, didn't even think to look around the website and at the forums!  D'oh!

No models, so I am making it myself...

So the late Dean Freytag's book on steel got me interested in steel. I dreamed, schemed and planned what I would do when I had time and money. Then one day a couple years back I discovered direct reduced iron.

Putting it all together

 Hi Folks,

I was wondering how different people approach putting scenes together on there railroads.

You have your track plan, you have your era and local, and you have your railroad of choice.

I can see the industry, and the supporting trackwork needed to operate it.

But the challenge for me is not the track or the industries it is trying to plan a scene so the it looks realistic, and plausable, and everything looks like it belongs where it is located.
