Building Flats vs. ?
I am in the process of designing an industrial switching shelf layout and am wondering if there is any scenic advantage to having buildings on the backdrop having any thickness to them. I initially started with the buildings that would have rail sidings be up to two inches thick to have them stand off from the backdrop which would also have printed buildings on them for depth. I am not sure if the effect would be just as good if these customer structures were building flats. If I can gain an inch, or so by making the structures flats, I could use that inch or so el

What reasons justify a single track lift bridge
From other sources, I have just been told that lift bridges would not have been allowed in the Pittsburgh area because of the high density of traffic in the rivers. I also have been informed that there would not have been any kind of canal coming into PA or OH from Lake Erie to allow boats to get any further inland to connect to the Ohio River because the railroads would have opposed it because it would be a major loss in revenue from teh iro ore and coal traffic. So now i'm in the very bad position of having a model of a single track bridge that i want to incorpo
Critique of yard track plan
I posted this in my blog, but haven't received any comments there and I'd like some feedback (affirmative or critical) of my revised yard track plan since I'll start laying track there very shortly. The track plan for the yard is attached as both an image for quick viewing (or here), as well as in XtrkCad format if that's easier.

Help with track plan
Hello All,
This is my first attempt at layout design. I want to model a portion of the Newark and New York division of the CNJ in HO scale. In my design I am concentrating on the area where I grew up, Jersey City. My design elements incorporate the following:

HELP! Single mainline vs Double mainline
I'm planning a HO layout in a fairly large space 18' x 35'. There is some bonus space adjacent to the room that can be used for helices. The prototype is the Milwaukee Road in the transition era and the location is rural Wisconsin just west of Milwaukee. Doing my research, I see that the track was double track at the time (it is single track now CN and sees at least one train an hour). My plan is to have staging above the layout and have two decks that go around three walls of the room with two towns per deck.

A Finished Slate
My wife says I don't listen but to prove her wrong I listened to your comments. I cleaned the slate and started over trying my best to take into account all of your advice. I went back and re-read my books and studied track plans from the paper magazine. The result is a much simpler, more build-able track plan that fulfills all of the G&D's. Does this look more like a realistic approach?
BTW I have it built in XTrackCAD also so I am sure the turnout angles and such are workable. As a matter of fact it utilizes mostly #10 turnouts. How sweet.

Curve Radius Question
If I have a hidden turn back loop where the viewing realism doesn't matter, is a 24" radius adequate for reliable 6 axle diesel operation? Assuming the track work is correct and the rolling stock in a 1970's 18-20 car train is NMRA compliant is there any concern of string lining? Everything I read says it will work but I would like to hear your practical experience opinion.
Thanks,

Looking for a double track mainline in the Erie, PA area...
The Frelanced South Erie, Titansburg, and Iriton RR, will be an industrial railroad that serves various industries in northwest PA, and northeast, OH including a Lake Port, fully integrated Steel Mill, cement plant, and many smaller industries including some in Erie, PA.

Insert Image into XTrackCAD 4.0.3a?
I feel stupid. I can't figure out how to import an image into XTrackCAD. I want to "trace" my image with the track elements.
Anyone know how to do this?

A not so Blank Slate
It has been nearly 3 weeks since I last asked you for your critique of the LK&O track plan. The information received was immensely helpful. Thank you. I've been real busy of late with things other than railroad but finally had an opportunity to make changes per your suggestions.
May I humbly ask for a second glance from you?
