Compact Shelf Plan Advice

I recently took down a layout that had been in place for a long time and part of the new layout project was to move my workbench and install some shelving.  Since I will be layout-less for awhile, I'd planned on laying some track on one of the shelves to keep myself entertained and to use as a future RIP track,  but need some help on a design that is functional and makes sense.

Helix Construction Question

I'd like to get some opinions from the experts! (Other than not to build a helix... ;) )  I'm building a helix with track radii of 29 3/4" & 32".  It's going to have 8 1/2 turns with an additional on/off ramp for the outer track in the middle.

Here's where I'd like some input.  I'm putting C100 track directly on 3/4" Birch Plywood.  Should I solder every rail together, or every other rail?  Also, if I solder every rail, how many feeders would I need to put on?  I'm thinking one per turn.

Thanks in advance!

Track Plan Critique

Hello all!  I've spent many hundreds of hours going through designing what I thought would be the perfect track plan for the area that I have.  I've solicited opinions and help from a few people.  Now I have a plan that I like, but I just want to make sure that there aren't any glaring deficiencies...

North Western Pacific/ Eel River canyon.

I'm having a little trouble trying to track down a 1900's era Railroad map of the Northwestern Pacific RR.

and/ or The North coast Railroad.

The particular part i'm interested in is the branch that runs from Alton(formerly Hansen at the time) to

Carlotta.

I know it was formerly operated by the PALCO  as far as the mill at carlotta and had running rights to eureka,

Here is the start of my new layout plan ...

Hello all,

For those who are interested. Here is the start of my new plan. It was done in 3rd Planit and was a little difficult to get into a form that you all could see, but the part up top is the important bit. The yard / industrial area is based on the Yard at Mansfield, MA. If you look at Google Maps, and search for Mansfield and look wast of the junction of rt 140 and rt 106, move to the center of town and then follow the N-S line, which is Amtraks NE Corridor, you will see the yard north of the station on the west of the tracks.

LDA use

On Joe Fugate's Siskiyou Lines website, he has a discussion of Layout Design Analysis, or "how to determine if the layout is functional, while you're still in the pencil and paper stage (or in my case the CAD drawing stage).

Bellina drop radius

The recent thread on degree curvature and compensated grades http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/946 had me wondering about things like the Bellina Drop.  Essentially it's a turnback at the end of a peninsula with a view block at the very end.  The general idea being to get people to not hang out there and get to the other side faster so they don't clog the aisles.

N scale switching layout critique

Ok, (gulp) I’m ready to step up and have my small switching layout plan critiqued. My previous layouts were based on someone else’s plans so this is my first attempt at not only my own plan but also something prototypical which is what I really want to do eventually. I’ll be honest in that the subject I picked may not offer the most interesting subject for operations but it does offer me the chance to work on selective compression ideas and scratch building.

Mushrooms!

I understand the basics of a mushroom layout, the idea of compressing the benchwork without compressing the scenery depth by stacking them on top of the other; there by getting the same depth for half the space. Where I struggle is envisioning applying the mushroom concept to layout planning. I’m not at all being critical of the concept, just trying to figure out how to apply it.
