Construction Journey (ICG St Louis District)

First shots going forward.    These are sections from the old layout.   Much modification ahead.    GMO711

Oops.

Since I now have a respectable length (~60', N-scale) of mainline laid, including a runaround at the far end, I got the rolling stock out and started to run some trains. Which means I'm finding things like dodgy track work and this:

Double-stack won't clear mousehole

And that, children, is why your NMRA track and clearance gauge is your friend.

1900 models - Wabash 8-axle flatcars

Some years ago I built this 4-truck model with an very realistic load after a picture in MR. Here is a link to picture of original Wabash flat #20006 with its heavy load.

This week in 3D Printing

So last week I ran across this little gem:

http://www.solidconcepts.com/news-releases/worlds-first-3d-printed-metal...

This is the world's first 3D printed 1911 gun.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7ZYKMBDm4M

The gun is made using the metal sintering process.  They did not make a plastic part and then cast a mold, the machine welded layers of metal powder together building up the final piece.  They up to 600-1000 rounds with it now...

If you have the Real Estate

While searching for a railroad to model, I found this in Burley ID on an Eastern Idaho Railroad (EIRR) branch.

The image is from Google Earth of an ethanol plant.

The oval is over 4000' with the largest diameter being over 1175'. The run-around track is approximately 1744'.

Thought I would share.

Progress Report: Coved Backdrop

I retired about four weeks ago (yay!).....and it's amazing how busy you can get, even with the extra 40 hours per week you used to spend in the office. However, I've made a promise to myself to post a layout construction update here every week -- which means getting something done that's worth reporting on.

To start off, my DCC system:

The GP50 Does Work After All

However, it doesn't work consistently. Both lights come on, but I had to squeeze the frame halves together and it sometimes ran, other times did not. I got it to go back and forth on the sections of test track I put together.

So I know it works, but I think there is something wrong. I took the frame apart and put it back together with no joy.

I am now thinking that the brushes, which supply power from the trucks to the frame are dirty or bad. I can clean them, but I can't get the trucks themselves apart.
