Modeling my childhood home - Part 2: Switching to traditional scratch built techniques

I got to thinking that if I was going to build many structures then the laser route was the way to go; however, I only plan on building this one structure so.....

I’ve decided to just scratch build it using pre-made brick sheets and styrene.

more to come...

G&D Sorethroat Branchline Mk3, construction has started

Hello,

I did some thinking about the trackplan and I wasn't happy with it. In 1992 September Issue of Modelrailroader, there was a trackplan for a proposed layout in a small room called Spokane, Pasco & Wallace. Since I saw these trackplan in the 90s I tried to plan a layout based on these plan. Over the years these plan was stored in the backs of my brain, but during the last weeks it reemerged. ^_^

Shapeways smooth fine plastic detail removal

I believe have found the correct size Shapeways  reefer unit. The problem is the rear door latches and details need to be removed. I will use a decal from a photo to replace the details of the door. Can the printed 3d latch details be removed easily, like box car details?

What to do before repainting a locomotive?

I decided that the lone SW9 on my freelance railroad, the Spring City & Northern (SPRG), was recently sold to a paper mill.  Instead of stripping the paint right away, I snapped a few photos and came up with the following story.  Enjoy,

Greg

WIP -CN Intermodal Yard

Temporarily set the Intermodal scene on my layout -Trenton Subdivision in N Scale  and placed much of the elements to ensure that everything will fit and gauge locations for light poles. The lights are non-working as I won’t be operating the layout in the dark. The telephone poles in the foreground will be substituted for lights.

Speed painting a backdrop

Because of my career, I've always had limited time for modeling.  I have tended to work very fast and try to get goals done in a few hours.  Ironically, now that I am retired, I still seem unable to slow down.  I decided to paint the backdrop and get it all done as soon as possible.  There is about 60 feet of 18 inch high backdrop to be painted so I got all my acrylic paints together and went at it with a vengeance.  I finished it in about 20 hours of work over about 4 days.

Would you pay someone to do something you hate

I have a dead serious but absolutely off the wall question: would you pay someone to do part of the hobby that you absolutely hate and don’t care to ever get better at? I’ve hit a huge stumbling block with track laying, I absolutely despise it, which is a monumental problem in our hobby. I’ve survived a bunch of b.s. that none of you want to hear about, you’d think track laying would be small potatoes to me but I can’t/won’t do it.

EL and CN around Buffalo

Progress is slow on the EL but thought I would post a few pics.  The desire to move to another house is keeping me from getting a lot done.  And now the real estate market is pretty much shutdown.

I am currently modeling the section between Black Rock and Fort Erie.  On the US side, the Erie Canal terminated near here and ran under the left side of the swing bridge.  It was eventually converted to the NYS thruway.
