DC - Electrical

My freelance NS and CSX railroad.

Welcome to the Schmidt Division of CSX and the Berry Division of NS in HO Scale.

The name of Schmidt for the CSX division is named after my late grandfather who worked for the railroad for 50 years. The name of Berry for the NS division is named after a close friend of mine who honestly got me back into train both model and prototypes.

DC testing of DCC wired layout

I'm actually getting close to running some trains on the lower decks of my new layout,...lower main level & sub-level staging decks. I've wired it to be a DCC layout, but have NOT yet installed any of those DCC circuit boards.

My thoughts are to pre-test the layout with DC control,...to find any shorts, mis-wirings etc.

Can this be done? Can I just hook up a good DC power pack to my buss wiring??

DC control

I need to know what value pot to use to control the DC voltage to my HO layout. I'm using and old transformer and know how to construct a bridge rectifier. Thanks in advance.

Improving Athearn RTR Loco Electrical Pick Up

I picked up a new/old-stock Athearn RTR SD40T-2 a few years back and only just now got around to installing a RailPro LM-3S receiver into it. Let me back up a bit and state that the loco ran just fine on straight DC-only power. Fast-forward to today: AFTER installing the RailPro receiver and soldering any/all connections in the loco, it ran incredibly erratic! It would run a bit, stop, start, run, stop, start, yadda, yadda. When standing still and just touching one of the trucks, it would lose power.

Atlas snap relays with Dick Bronson's Tower Controller Mark II

Hello everybody, back with another question. So the large layout I work on inFayetteville, I post updates every now and then, has gotten to the point with rewiring that I am starting to plan out the signal system Electronics needed in detail. I've already decided to go with Dick Bronson's components but Nolan - the layout owner - has given me the condition that we have to use up his massive stockpile of Atlas switch control boxes and switch machines.

Athearn SD40-2 DC to DCC

I have a 37+ year old SD40-2 and would like to install a new DCC motor.  What all do I need to do this? I also need a new rear worm drive assembly for the rear.  What is a good source for old parts?  Any help is greatly appreciated.
