Large Industries

Just brainstorming here to see what ideas other folks have for large multi car industries that could, should or have been modeled.

I have seen these before (brewery, paper mill, steel plant and auto plant) so lets see what the rest of you have for ideas or that you have done yourselves.

Oh and if you've done one of the industries I've already mentioned lets see those pictures too... smiley

Type of handrail

How do I determine what type of handrail is on this diesel?

Is it a L/H Handrail: High or a L/H Handrail: Straight.

Illinois Railway Museum - Special Event Sunday, April 29, 2018

So, this coming weekend, Illinois Railway Museum is having a special, free celebration. I'm sure it will be packed with kids, but for free I can put up with it. Free admission, free train and trolley rides (electric only), but no food service available.

History: From the ARA to the ARA to the AAR

Just what or who merged joined with the ARA in 1919?  Enquiring minds want to know:)

I know that MCB and others merged / joined with the ARA in 1919 possibly as a reaction to USRA control.

edit:  See below post of news from 1919.  The American Railway Association became the American Railroad Association at the order of the USRA

I know this so far about the ARA and AAR:

Unloading Woodchip Hoppers

When railroads switched to 100T coal hoppers, some railroads converted their 70T hoppers to woodchip service. Would these be unloaded using the gates at the bottom of the hopper or with a rotary dumper? Would it depend on the volume? Would it vary by paper mill?

Positioning passenger equipment

Would the steam generator car always be between the diesel and the train?

And could the baggage car be behind the passenger car?

Smokey The Bear Posters

I found an interesting source of images of Smokey The Bear posters, dated from 1949 through 1979. It seems like they would provide you with a nice, subtle bit of detail to help establish the era of your layout while adding a spot of color to your structures.

Here's a link to the South Carolina Forestry Commission Archives, Fire Prevention Posters website: Open in new window

Cass W.Va Company Store dimensions...

Dear MRHers,

By any chance, does anyone happen to know any basic dimensions of the Mower Lumber nee Cass Lumber Company Store building in Cass W.Va? Even a guide window dimension would help. I've poured over both online and hardcopy pics but can't seem to get a guide height or width dimension which syncs-up

- The dimensions of the clipboard planks
- Dimensions of the 2nd and 3rd storey windows
(as compared to various laser-cut and styrene windows in my "modelling warehouse")
- Dimensions of average floor/ceiling height
