Future of the railroad business

I'd like  to hear people's thoughts on the future of the railroad companies, as businesses. Does the future look like a long, slow decline or ever greater profitability? I'm interested in the business, rather that the future of the industry as an employer.

If you owned stock in a railroad business, do you think it's a good investment for the next ten years? Or is it likely to lag?

Question about oil storage tanks

Todays storage tanks have a berm built around them, was that a standard practice in the early 70s?

The Wathers kit has the berm included, but I dont know if thats correct for 1972.

Woodinville, Washington once was the hub of activity of the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern, followed by the Northern Pacific, Burlington Northern, BNSF, and finally the home of Eastside Freight Railroad (recently shut down as of August 2020).

Steel Mill with a tropical twist

I visited the SIDOR steel mill in Venezuela in 1999 while working there.  Alco (re-engined) and GE switchers a plenty in a place no one has heard of.

My N Scale journey - Part 2 - some industry research

Hi again,

As mentioned in my previous (and first) blog entry, my 5.5 x 2.5 N scale layout isn't prototypical, however it is my plan to create a themed Scottish layout and try to stay true to this as far as possible.

Southern narrow gauge diversion...way south

I wonder if anyone makes 75cm gauge equipment... I can see the attraction of narrow gauge railroads.  I blog about my time working in southern Argentina with narrow gauge steam in my backyard.  Southern Diversion
