Double Main Tracks to Single Main Track Free Mo Module - Signaling, Control, and Operation

Hi everyone,

I am doing a small shelf layout but wanted to experiment with signaling. I plan to do a free mo module (3' long) modeling a location just a mile or two east of Kandiyohi, Minnesota. It is now BNSF, but was originally Great Northern. It is CTC-operated and is set up with two main tracks (operation in both directions) converging into a single main track. My question has several parts:

Farmrail paint recommendations

Friends!

Can anyone recommend paint colors for Farmrail locomotives and their caboose?

Round top/Wagon top boxcars

I realise these were a B&O design but I have three questions about them:

1. Were they used by any other roads?

2. When did they disappear?

3. Were they only 40ft cars?

Thanks!

"The Dakotan" and Other Pike-Sized Trains

After purchasing a 1954 Great Northern Timetable, I remembered the great MR series of articles regarding pike-sized trains.

I am considering modeling "The Dakotan" since it was the only train serving Kandiyohi, MN in the 1950's. How many of you model short passenger trains (without compression) on your layout and what do you do for operations?

It's Just Blue

When I decided to paint up a few HBMS GE70 Ton Locomotives, I picked a paint based on photos. I knew there were shades of blue in the photos. In some cases you can see swapped parts with shades of blue on the same locomotives. However, I picked Conrail blue for my locomotives as it seemed to be the closest to my guess of faded paint. Now over the twenty years I have been up in Flin Flon, and visits to the locomotives, I never thought about pulling some peeling paint. Then all but one of the locomotives were scrapped so I missed the opportunity for most of the locomotives.

Mixing rolling stock road names in a freight train

I'm looking at buying some rolling stock and I'm interested in finding out what I can use with a 1950's - 1960's Southern Pacific or Santa Fe freight train?

From my limited knowledge I understand I can run about any road name box car. What about other type cars like tank cars, gondolas, hoppers, flat cars, etc.?  Other than lease tank cars, do I need to run only SP or SF road name cars?

Thanks!
