Prototype information

Viewing Distance

A recent post got me thinking.  We often refer to "viewing distance" as how far we appear to be from a given model.  Often we assume that we will be 2 to four feet from our models when we look at them.  In HO scale that is about 150 to 400 feet.  But I have to ask,is it really?   If you took a model an placed it 2 to 4 feet in front of you and lined up its prototype next to it in your view at what distance would you see them as the same size?

SPSF Meadow Sub: Ex-SP Kodachrome SW1500 - A Locomotive Detail and Painting Blog

A couple weeks ago, I embarked on yet another kodachrome repainting project for my proto-lanced SPSF Railway, this time an ex-SP SW1500.

What follows is my personal journal through all steps of this project.

Autoracks for non-auto loads?

Are autorack cars only used for cars? Or are there sometimes other items loaded because this car type suits well?

Car Storage as a Layout

How about rail car storage as a layout?

You've got tons of staging, yards, a wye, two loops to turn around (put those tropes to work!). You can also use an area of turnouts sitting in place that you haven't gotten around to setting up yet as a prototypical area of expansion.

They have several SD40s and south of the sand facility you can see the tracks being built to their now-finished maintenance facility and car repair shop.

Railroad Signal is up...

Well, after a couple of years of waiting, my railroad signal is up, although I admit I didn't have much to do with it. A friend who arranged for me to get the Ex-SP/UP Valley Line signal (he got three) and his son had already put their three up that morning and with the trackhoe operator had erecting them to a science by the time they got to mine. My best course was to stay out of the way... and I ended up with this:

Domino Sugar in Chalmette Louisiana

Does anyone have information or photos of the Domino Sugar Refinery in Chalmette, Lousiana?  A track diagram or switching layout would be particularly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

RPM Chicagoland

I just got back from an enjoyable time at the RPM Chicagoland in Lisle, IL. Mike Skibbe and company put on a new and improved show and I think the attendees were appreciative. I’m new to RPM meets so I’m not a good judge, but from what I could tell everyone had a great time.
