Concrete Block painting
I've found many, many articles on painting bricks but not much on painting concrete blocks.
I've found Tom Johnson's Feller's Garage post but his blocks end up being painted white and other colors. The weathering part is helpful though.
Unfortunately, walls don't look like this for every long:
They get stained, have white stains and the mortar ends up darker.
Something to keep me busy - A diorama
I have recently dismantled my home layout while I was moving to a new city. I have not yet determined how much I can spare for the new layout.
I can still run trains since I remain a club member on my former city, but I fell I need something to improve my modeling skills.
So I decided to build a diorama, a completely non-rail related one, and set in my country/region for a change. I plan to display the diorama at my workplace, so I will model a rural scene (I work for the state agriculture department).
Frog Trivia
Joe Fugate's book on trackwork has much sage advice, and a focal point is frogs in chapter 10. The merit of dead and live frogs is discussed, along with the frog juicer. Frogs are often considered amphibious swamp creatures, so all this talk of turnout frogs got me wondering about the term's origin. Some wikipedia info:
Sanborn Map help
Good evening all,
I'm starting a scratchbuilding project based on the building diagram below. There's one bit of information that I don't know regarding the drawing. There are two heights noted on the plans. There's a 12 ft. height on the "top" outline near the center. There's also a 22 ft.height notation near the lower left corner.
Where to get Canadian CNR or CP outline trackside equipment
I am building a Fremo module of a Canadian grain handling facility. Not modeling any one in particular but using details from several. However I am struggling to find some of the trackside details, like these hand thrown switch machines in 1:87 scale.
SPSF Meadow Sub: C39-8E Custom Paint/Decal/Weathering with DCC/Sound Project
This blog details the painting, decaling, and weathering of a C39-8E for the SPSF that will have DCC and sound for operation on the Meadow Subdivision.
Last Project of the Year
Well here is the final project for the year. I Kit bashed a Highway Miniatures Erie B-2 Steam Shovel into a Marion Type 450. HBMS had 10 of these versatile units.
I used almost everything from the kit with the exception of the boiler.
Google 3D as a modeling aid
(I just posted this same video link in another thread but thought it might deserve it’s own thread.)
It’s amazing how much modeling information can be gleaned from the low resolution Google 3D viewer. I took some screen video of the Beaumont, TX, Gerdau steel plant (see below). Check out how much structural and scenic information is available including all the variations of color. Very cool.
Note: enlarge the video as much as possible on your screen for greater appreciation of what Google 3D can capture as a modeling aid.
