Tank cars from the 1960s

There is a great thread about modern tank cars here http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/12090 It details a lot of the current cars and HazMat issues.

However I'm modeling an earlier, less complicated time. My HO layout is set in early 1962 and my Fn3 is in the Depression Era.

One of my industries on the HO layout is an Union Oil LPG refinery. I'm casting about for cars or info about them to service this fella! It was interesting, as it was down a single spur, so involved a flying switch to get the empties in without trapping the loco.

Tip: Glue application bottle for applying thinned white glue

I thought that I would share this tip on a bottle that I use to apply thinned (25% glue / 75% water) white glue to ballast.  I purchased a squeeze bottle from Hobby Lobby and screwed on an inflation needle used to inflate balls and such.  The result is a tip with a very small hole that allows for precise application of the glue without washing away the ballast.  With the capacity of the bottle I don't have to "reload" like when using an eye dropper or pipette.  When it's not in use I seal the tip with a tooth pick.

So who still makes model paint?

I went to my LHS in search of a bottle of paint. The color I needed was sold out so I told that man I wanted to order a bottle of Floquil. He told me that brand was discontinued. So I told him to order a bottle of Polly Scale, He told me that was discontinued also. Those were the only two bands that had the color I needed. angry

Christmas Layout Video's

Post your Christmas Train Video's here! All scales welcome!

Here's a video I recently put together at my Uncles brothers house. His train room felt like I walked into a toy store in the early 50's. If I was a kid I'd never want to leave :)

Vancouver BC Trains 2013 Show 9-10 Nov

As some of you might have heard, our Vancouver Train show was rumoured to have died.  I would like to say any rumours of the demise of the Train Show were wrong, however it did almost die.  A group of us came together who wanted the show to go on so that kids could be introduced to the hobby and the train fanatics could continue to get their good deals.  Almost none of us wanted to be on the committee....lol!

50' Mechanical Reefers

A comment I made in another thread got me thinking: Athearn's two variations of a 50' mechanical reefer are the only HO scale representations of that type of car that I can think of. There have been numerous 40' bunkers and 57' reefers in HO, but is there something I'm missing? This seems like a pretty big gap I'm HO. As someone who models 1970, ice bunkers were still in service, and the 57' cars were coming on the scene, but the majority of my reefers should be 50' cars. I have a bunch of Athearns in both PFE and Santa Fe, but a little variety would be nice!

Tam Valley Depot - *** Update 11/1/13*** heard from Duncan

**** Update *** Ducan emailed me today to say that he already shipped me the part. I am a happy camper!

Anybody have any success lately in getting responses from MRH sponsor Tam Valley?  I recently purchased a dozen of their "Singlet" turnout controllers and one of the units was missing a very important tiny screw that holds the actuator arm on the servo.

To Primer or Not to Primer. That is the question.

Since I want to use acrylic paint such as Polly Scale to paint rolling stock, could I use, depending on the color,  a white or gray acrylic as a base coat under an acrylic finish coat or should I use a primer?

Is it a bad idea to use acrylic paint as a base coat under an enamel finish coat?

Thanks,

George
