Modeling general discussion

Airbrush acrylic paint thinning...

I was curious, when you guys paint with acrylics and an airbrush, do you thin the paint with water or alcohol? And what ratio do you usually thin it to?

Reducing LED brightness

I am building a turntable for my layout and have designed and built the control panel. On the control panel I have LEDs to indicate the spar I selected and LEDs when the bridge is in place. I am a retired Electrical Engineer so I know all about reducing the current/voltage to reduce output of these LEDs. Without getting into the design, these are in series and parallel with other components so voltage changes are not an option since it affects too many other things.

A switching insight--obvious, but I missed it

As I plan my shelf switcher, I had a sudden realization of the absolute obvious:  There are two very distinct sorts of industry switching.

The first is the most modeled; supplying rail served industries.

The second is the operations inside an industry that’s big enough to have cars loaded, switched to another spot in the same facility, and unloaded.  (Steel plants, lumber mills, shipyards, the Guinness brewery, and many other small industrial lines)

Baking soda sand blaster

A while ago some one posted pictures of a home made sand blaster that used baking soda to remove model paint, would it be possible to obtain further details?

                                                Thanks in advance,

How'd he do

My son went out on his own lastnight and bought a lot of trains from a woman on Craigslist. Heres what he got..

6 Bachmann DCC on board New in box locos

1 bachmann spectrum new in box

1 older bachmann dd40x new in box

All locos run, lastnight was the first time the boxes have ever been opened, I know he scored with them, but I'm not sure on the other stuff.

1 Hawthorne village budweiser train set..in original boxes, but opened

1 Hawthorne village john way set...in original boxes, but opened

Ditch lights.

A question for any and all willing to give me some ideas   Ditch lights.  I've gotten in the habit of trying to add ditch lights to a loco that I fix up, add DCC to, or just refurbish, DC or DCC.  What are you guys using?

I've gone through a pile of tiny incandescent bulbs trying to find the perfect mix of brightness and resistor.  Maybe I should go to LED's ?

About couplers

I'm sure this belongs in the category of silly questions, but the only way to learn is ask.

Kadee and other vendors offer couplers that have over-, center- and under- bars. I understand (and use) these as needed to make my rolling stock meet specs. My question is: do these over, under & center couplers exist in the real world or is this only within modeling to help us make things align properly?

Thanks!
