Modeling general discussion

Getting Started on Modeling

Hello, I am new to model railroading. My track is wired and operational. How do I get started with modeling? I already have a few built structures, I am wondering about groundcover. Do you use clay?

Details: My RR is in Pennsylvania/New York in a valley

Worlds largest Model Railroad

Interesting post on gawker about the worlds largest model railroad and a Sony project to document it. They claim its 16 acres, 50,000 feet of track, and enough lumber to build 42 houses

Model Railroading on a Budget - one man's junk is another man's treasure

Tyco - the name screams cheap to many. But there is treasure in those garage sale and flea market finds.

Recently I was given a box full of Tyco HO rolling stock for free. To most serious modelers the response to this is probably Yecchh!

But in looking through the box I found that there is gold in old rolling stock, especially for those of us on a fixed budget for modeling.

What can be done with these old cars? Here is a list of things I have found to do with them so far.

Model Railroading on a Budget - getting down to brass tracks

I was going through some of my boxes the other day and came across a box of brass HO track in Code 100. Not much I can do with this I originally thought, but then it hit me, it may not be useful for running trains but it can have many other uses in model railroading. Here is a list of thoughts to get started.

ACI placement

Could someone help me in suggesting where I would put an ACI label on this hopper.

I'm doing this from an iPad so I can't attach a pic, but here is a link to the image:

Battery Power and Radio Control -

I am posting up this link to spur discussion on battery power and radio control as it applies to model railroading.I am just recently learning quite a bit about it from a well respected and knowledgeable source on battery power and radio control. He has converted several of my locos to battery/radio and I have to say, this is very interesting.

Check out the video if you have time and are curious about battery power and radio control. And no, I am not selling anything related to battery power or radio control,. This is just a fun and informative video only.

Reflective Paint

I've seen reflective paint(white/yellow) used in occupational safety applications, hunter track markings,  usually in a spray can application.

Is there a paint equivalent that can applied using an airbrush or brush?

I know about the DIY formalation using glass reflective beads and a colorized binder but I'm not certain if it is effective in H0 scale.
