Faded paint

I model a lot of cars that are within 5 or 6 years of the new/repaint date. I was wondering how long does it take  before the paint starts to fade?

2 tone paint job, what to use to get a crisp line between colors?

I'm painting a undecorated southern pacific GS 4 into daylight colors.i need a fairly crisp line between the orange and red colors used. What do you use to help maintain a crisp line and no overspray?

Thank you

Embedded GPS location in photos of your layout

Over the years, some local layout modelers have become leery of anyone within the modeling community knowing where they live for fear of theft and destruction of their layout.  Now I understand this fear, but I also understand reinforcing your roof to withstand a meteorite hit but what are the odds? In the TV program "A Thousand Ways to Die," in fact one young adult was struck and killed by a meteorite while ironically giving a religious rant.

I recieved something very interesting from a friend the other day....

... it is 5 pieces of very old flex track.  I am pretty sure this stuff is from the 60's or older.  The ties are made something like a card board or the like.  They are brass rail, and very interesting. Would this be something a model railroad museum would want?

I don't thought maybe the forum might.

Micro Mark wheel cleaning station # 81630

it was brought to my attention that this wheel cleaning system may not be very DCC friendly, One statement was that it fried the electronics on a BLI engine when used.

anyone have this cleaner and able to share experiences with us.

Is a router a tool that has enough potential applications to make the investment worthwhile?

As a tool junkie I have no problem working up the temptation and I do have a few situations where owning a router would be helpful, but I just don't know if over the long haul it would be a reasonable investment.  Perhaps anyone who's used one on their railroad would have an opinion on this.

Weekly Photo Fun - April 17th to April 23rd, 2015

Great work last week everyone!  Its time to start this weeks Weekly Photo Thread!

As always, we get as much out of your in-process photos as we do the highly polished "all done" shots!

Building a resistance soldering unit

I'm considering building a resistance soldering station. I've seen and have the plans to build one using a battery charger for power. However if I don't have to I'd rather not have to buy a charger for this. I have easy access to ballasts for metal halide light fixtures. Would one of these work or am I better off just getting a charger? The ballast I have sitting around is multi tap for 120V up to 480V and is made to power 400W metal halide bulb.

Model Power is alive

Just got off the Model Rectifier site.

They now have a tab for Model Power. It looks like they will carry most of the items that Model Power had in the last few years. Including some of the Mantua classics.

An amazing opportunity, if viewed properly...

I've been working on my HO scale partial-mushroom layout for about 6 years, and was just poised to expand into another room, when my wife decided she wants to move close to her grand children. At first I told her I'd miss her, but I'd be willing to commute from the Atlanta area to the Charlotte area. After thinking about it, she said she didn't like that idea, she wanted me to be with her. "But my railroad is attached to the concrete walls permanently! It's not portable!
