Modeling general discussion

Three and no more???

Three and no more....

Three what?  Hobbies, of course - and three projects per hobby.  My best friend's Dad once said to make sure that you limit your hobbies / interest to three and no more.  The reasoning is that is you go beyond three you will not be able to do justice to / enjoy your hobbies and interests.  Yes, you can do more than three; however, you can become to diluted - just like too much water in a good bourbon ( I am a Louisville, Kentucky boy!)

How do you reconcile seasonal residence and model railroading?

Canadians go to their cottages.  New Englanders head for Forida in the wiinter.  Nantucket is full of southerners in the summer.

What happens to model railroading?

My wife and I have spent at least four months a year away from our primary home and my primary railroad for the past five years.  It hasn't been easy, though I have worked out some solutions.

Prototyping an automobile color?

Yeah, that's right. Trying to figure out something about the prototypewink.... of a model T that is. I'm building a 1923 Model T Stake truck and everything I'm reading leads me to believe it would have been black. All Model T's were Black after a certain year from what I understand.

Workbench lighting

I am in the process of building a new layout and a new workbench.

On my old workbench I had the swing arm lighting, but it always seemed to get in the way or the light was pointed in the wrong direction. I have considered a long florescent tube, but there is no shelf or structure above the workbench (This time the workbench is in a spare bedroom where I have to keep it neat.)

I am looking for suggestions on which lighting you use on your workbench, good, bad, and not so ugly.

Thanks Bill.

Laurentian Coated Products

This is my first post. And with it I would like your critiques and suggestions of the track plan I have designed for the new house I just bought.

This layout will be a 12'x12' L shaped switching layout based around 1 industry with a small staging yard on each end.

Laurentian Coated Products is a 292,000 TPY capacity integrated paper mill located in Northeast New York on Lake Champlain close to the Laurentian Mountains of Southern Quebec. Era is contemporary.

Real world measurements for your layout

I've been out several times in the past year taking measurements of the area I'm modeling. Along with the cars and engines and details like signs, tracks, etc., I want the roads and land to be correct too.

Oddball railroad technical question

How big a truck would be needed to pull a fully loaded box car (40') on a flat surface, with track inset inset into the pavement, like at a naval base?  The truck is on its tires, not railroad wheels, and hitched with whatever chain is available.  I'm working on a story set in 1941, and the protagonist needs to move ammo--and there's nothing with steam up.  (Or rather, what had steam up, has just had the steam released through many brand new holes in the boiler...)

I figured that, if anyone had an answer, it would be people here...

3D Programs for 3D Printing

What kind of programs other than Sketchup is anyone using for 3D printing?
