Safety and your model railroad layout

I've posted something similar to this before; however, the subject is so important I felt that it was time to post again.  Safety is very important especially if you have visitors to your layout.  I had a number of open houses for my basement Richlawn Railroad layout and I tried to make the environment as safe as possible.  Here are a few tips:

1.) Have your exits clearly marked if not obivious.and make sure that the exit path is clear of obstacles.

2.) Have smoke detectors in your train room and in all areas that require them.

Ebay model railroading listing changes

EBay  in its wisdom has changed the way items are listed on Model Railroads . Its now impossible to just browse through craftsman building kits for example. There are more examples. This is  bad for sellers and buyers alike. I called EBay today and was told that I could not speak to anyone to register a complaint and could not email anybody! I had to send a letter to San Jose CA Headquarters but with no attention to anybody. Does this action bother anybody else?

Couldnt find the right catagory for this so ...

I don't know if this is the right place, but my grandson is graduating from high school. My wife is making a photo board and all I have for a 2nd grade picture is a wallet size. It had some flaws which I was able to fix with Gimp but I cant for the life of me make it print at 5x7. I'm sure the resolution wont be too good or if it can be fixed in gimp or Photoshop. but anything is better than nothing. If any one can help it would be wonderful. I could email the file. Thanks Dick

Teaching my 9 year old how to clean the gears

Yesterday I decided to repair/clean some locomotives that have been sitting in boxes for quite a while.  My son was curious as to what I was doing so I decided to let him do the work with me coaching him.  Explained how the electricity makes the motor turn and how the gears work.  He did a great job of cleaning the gears and putting lubrication on them.  Hopefully he will get the train bug too!!   So after reading all the posts abo

eBay categories are messed up...........

............and I'm wondering if anyone has found out how to contact eBay to bitch about it?  People who sell a lot of Brass, for example, have to be beside themselves.

railquik

Awile back I decided to try railquick. I downloaded and installed it. Found out my computer lacks "access". There was some talk if I remember about possibly making it work with more open source programs. Has this been done yet? I know copies of access are still available but the ones I fi d are either not compatible with my machine or waaaaay out of my budget.

Model railroaders dying before their times: Bob Barlow at 64

I saw this morning on the Albion Yard  blog that Bob Barlow of Model Railway Journal fame has died at 64 of liver cancer.  Though MRJ  has been hard to find in the US and is thus not well known, Barlow's work there and elsewhere as a modeler, writer, and editor has been very influential.

Back issues of paper magazines that are LESS THAN 10 years old

OK, I know back issues from the 1990s and before have little to no value to most model railroaders.  My question is, what is the consensus of the value of back issues of magazines that are less than 10 years old.  I have a friend who has passed away and his widow is liquidating his model railroad collection.  I want to present a fair offer to her for the collection.  I have no use for the back issues as I have them in my own collection.  However, if I can sell them at train shows that I vend at already and make some money on those issues, I will include paying for t

TCM movie Sunday

Anybody else catch the Turner Classic Movies showing of "Bad Day At Black Rock" this afternoon?  I really loved seeing those gorgeous Southern Pacific F-Units and streamline train at the beginning with Spencer Tracy getting off and the again at the end with him leaving.

A nice parallel film using this device is "In The Heat Of The Night" with the Sidney Poitier lead character getting off an equally gorgeous Gulf Mobile And Ohio train at the beginning and leaving at the end.
