Kadee #5 vs. #148 couplers

I have been using Kadee #5 couplers on my cars for years. Since then, Kadee has introduced the #148 whisper coupler to their line of couplers. My question is, are the #148 couplers more reliable, and are they more prototypical then the #5 couplers. Any advice or experience with them would be appreciated.

Years to build, and only hours to take down

I have been working on my Richlawn Railroad for a few years and after much thought and making a list of "Positives" and "Negatives" it occurred to me that I would never finish the layout to my satisfaction.  In addition my layout shared my room with my office and I really needed more space.  The Mrs. was always kidding me (or not) about being a "railroad widow" so I finally bit the bullet and took it down.  It only took three hours to remove the result of years of work.

Here's what it looked like at 5:30 this morning:

What's On Your Workbench - The April Fool Edition

Ok, today is April Fool. So what are you Fooling around with on your workbench? As the weather gets warmer I'm sure the modelers in the northern climates are thinking about mowing the lawn (NOT). So when April showers come to bring May flowers I'm sure a few of us will spend that time at the layout or workbench.

So let's see what you are "Fooling" around with during those April Showers.

Signals facing 90 degrees to the main line track

Last week I was visiting Grand Junction, Colorado.  I went there by flying into Salt Lake City and driving.  While driving along the Central Corridor of the Union Pacific I saw some very interesting signals.

Secondary containment Tank Farm

Hi guys I was wondering if someone has ideas on what to use as a secondary containment on a tank farm that I am making.  It is in N scale and I have about 8 bachmann fuel tanks in an area.  I just don't know what to use for a secondary containment or how to do it and make it look right.  Any help would be appreciated

Modeling a large industry

I want to model a large industry, building is 1500 ft. x 1500 ft., longest rail is 5000 ft. What is best way to compress it down for HO layout?

Moderator note: Made thread title more specific to make it clear it's about modeling something rather than another thread on the hobby industry.

Prototype Rail Served Industry Scenes

The biggest issue I have is finding detailed images of rail served industries to model.

I saw this post and thought maybe,

Good Enough

At what point does a model become "good enough"? I revisited one of my projects yesterday, thinking all I had left to do was paint and decal. Well, then I saw something that needed to be added, then I looked at my decals and thought they were too dark compared to the prototype so inquired about getting some custom work done. In the back of my mind there are a couple of things that I won't change to fit the prototype. It's just too much work to get this particular detail replicated from the prototype.

Scale Trains Oil Tank Car Shipment Damaged

Received an email from Scale Trains that their oil tanks cars arrived, but were damaged in shipment via fork lifts and movement in the container.

They are inspecting them all ans sorting out next steps.

Huge bummer for them.  Hope they can get it straightened out somehow.

I am looking forward to these cars.

Hydrogen-powered Model Trains. Is it possible?

Could this be possible for HO scale models in the near future? Looks like it might work for G scale first. One minor problem. What do you do with the exhaust gas? (Water) It could warp your track work.
