Truck wire

I just installed  digitrax decoder in an ho kato nw2, wired the trucks direct using decoder wire . Problem is it continually breaks at the truck solder joint.  Is there a super flexible multi strand wire available or can someone recommend a wire and gauge. Thanks

Video - contest entries at the Fine Scale Model Railroad Expo 2016

I thought some might enjoy a look at some of the inspirational model entries as seen at the Fine Scale Model Railroader Expo 2016 held in Danvers, Mass this past weekend. MRH was there with Jean Francois and Les Halmos who are certainly two of the nicest guys in the business. I have seen them quite often over the past couple of years and they are always great to chat with if you get a chance.

Bachmann HO scale Climax

Hi all,

I have the old version of the Bachmann Climax with the split gears. Does anyone know if the new version has better gears? I have the NWSL gears to put in my existing climax, but I'm having difficulty getting the mesh right using NWSL instructions.

cheers

Alan

New to Model Trains...Athearn Set?

Hello,

I'm totally new to model trains.  Luckily, I have three shops within 15 minutes of my house.  Anyway, I was thinking of getting an Athearn pre-fab set to start, to keep costs down until I figure out if the hobby is really for me.  I have been told that Athearn is better quality than Bachmann for a little more money.  I have room for a 4x8 base.

Does anyone have thoughts on this?  Also, any advice on which Athearn sets in particular might be best for a new user?  I'm open to steam or diesel.

Thank you!

Modern Pattern & Foundry

With the recent thread on the photo wallpaper technique, I thought I'd post my latest project, Modern Pattern & Foundry for my Los Angeles Junction layout.  Two-thirds of the structure uses traditional techniques, the brick office in front uses the photo wallpaper method. Assembly details can be found on my blog at www.lancemindheim.com.  I uploaded the wallpaper image for those that want to give it a go.

Opinions on Proto 2000 locomotives

I sold my boat today and need to buy a new toy to make me feel better. I am looking at a proto 2000 switcher, (actually several) and it looks like 50-90 bucks is about the going price. I did a search of sw1200's and I see it will take some effort to put in sound and speaker so I am not going in totally uninformed.

My question is are they relatively smooth and quiet? Are there any maintenance issues other than a little cleaning and greasing.

My other option is KAto NW-2's of which there are several of those also.

Allagash Railway - Andover, Maine scenery complete - images

Hey guys,

Here are some images from the recently completed Andover, Maine on my Allagash Railway. More details like switch-stands, tie plates, ties, rail piles an general clutter need to be added, but basic scenery is complete.

Some of you may have heard that the original Andover was completely torn down over a year ago. I've attached one image (first pic) of the old branch, and a series of images of the "new" Andover. As you can see, they bear little resemblance.

Weekly Photo Fun - April 1st to April 7th, 2016

Great work everyone last week!  Time to start of this week's photo thread!

As always, we get as much out of your in-process photos as we do the highly polished "all done" shots!

Andrew
