Weathering vs Old Decals

Apologies if I may have missed something towards my question in past postings.  I recently bought  set of old decals and the film used is rather thick and obvious once they were applied to a red oxide boxcar. I'm wondering if anyone has tackled this situation by doing some weathering to hide the seams.  I have applied several coats of dull cote, which helped slightly but the decals are still obvious.

What is a good thinner to use for testors enamel?

I have some testors fluorescent paint that I want to use on some detail parts. It is enamel paint. What would be a good thinner to use? I will probably brush paint these, but may use an airbrush at some point. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Bachman N Scale RS-3 - Ignoring CVs 2,5,6

With my track nice and clean and several locos running perfectly, I turned my sights to a few locos that were not running so well, or not at all.  Good success all around with one oddity here.

It's another week . . . post 'em if you got 'em.

Tom Millers layouts...

I just watched a video of Tom Miller’s former Big Boy which is now in New Zealand.  This made me start to wonder what happened to all his other magnificent models and layouts, along with the 7 1/2 gauge railroad and the property? Does the railroad still exist in any form? What about the smaller scale indoor layouts? I never heard anything after seeing the sales video for his estate that was online a few years ago. Also curious why he liquidated everything, but if it’s a private issue,it doesn’t need to be answered here.

Layout lighting.....

There’s probably already a thread on this topic, however I couldn’t find it.....

I’ve had inexpensive 4’ single-tube fluorescent 32W shop lights, arranged end-to-end, set back a few inches from and following the bench work edge over the layout for 20 years. One is dead, a few more seem to be failing. I bought a 4’ LED fixture to test, however it was much too bright. Then I bought 12’ LED rope light to try, nowhere near bright enough.

Drilling VERY small Holes (in brass stock)

Are there some special technics that need to be observed when using really small diameter drills? These drills are very fragile, and some act like they don't cut that well.

I do realize that its likely they should be used with a pin-vise (hand tool),... but that is extremely slow when trying to drill thru thicker stock.  Is there a method/tool that would allow for power drilling? The dremel tools appear to operate at too high of a speed. I had thought that drilling brass might be easier?

Forming a curved handrail

I am trying to figure out how to make curved handrails; specifically, the handrails that top a metal grain storage silo.  The prototype was located at the end of the Santa Fe's Eden branch, it was literally the last structure on the line, and was composed of fifteen metal silos; all with what appears to be 2" to 3" pipe handrails lining the top.  That is my guestimate; it appears that the stanchions and the railings were of the same material.  Lots and lots of things in West Texas are made out of surplus/repurposed oilfield pipe,

Great MRH promotion on "What's Neat This Week"

I just finished watching "What's Neat This Week" show #129 with Ken Patterson and watched Joe Fugate do a terrific promotion for MRH magazine.  He did a great job giving MRH a general overview showing how it is a free online magazine and what it does and then went on to describe "Running Extra" and the differences between the two.  Great job Joe, this is exactly what we need to help more modelers understand the magazines.
