Modeling general discussion

Small (150 square feet or less) around the walls layout. Let's see them!

I'd be interested to see other "small" (150 square foot rooms or less) around the wall layouts.  I know that there have been previous threads about this but I'm sure that there are some new layout.  If you're one of the modelers that falls into this category please share your track plan / photos.  Thanks.

Weekly Photo Fun July 1 - July 7 , 2018

Here we are  for another week... July already !  Here is a Walthers boxcar with some added details, and weathered with pastels, acrylic and oil paints.

Two prototype questions: Graffiti and Pantographs

I was wondering why locomotives always raise the rear pantograph on an electric?  I'm sure there's a reason, as well as a reason to include two in the first place, but I don't know what it is.

Also, when did graffiti start to be a problem on railroad cars?

Steam modeling has come of Age

When I started in the hobby back in the 1950s layouts were dominated by model steam locomotives. Over the years diesels took over. One major reason was that most model steam locomotives were complicated and did not run well. Diesels did run well.

That has all changed now as today's HO steam locomotives run as well as do diesels. Not only that, the detail on most is equal to or supserior to brass imported models.

I am curious about what y'all think about this.

St Martins cab ride (video run through)

A little while back, I bought an action cam for my other hobby, rock climbing. Seemed like a great opportunity to experiment with shooting a video run-through on my layout.

After a lot of trial and (mostly) error I managed to turn out the vid on the link below. I was really pleasantly surprised by how it turned out; I found it uniquely satisfying to create a miniature environment and then find a way to actually experience it as though it were real.

Neil was in an accident and injured

umauma railway, A frequent poster that many of us know was recently injured in a bike crash. The injuries were serious but Neil is I believe recovering. I thought since we have not seen a lot in the way of posts from him lately all of us that know him might want to sign my scratch built internet card for him.
