Modeling general discussion

@geoffb (Dr. Geoff Bunza)

Dr. Geoff Bunza, Congratulations on your first HO Collector article on Lionel HO. The article was very well written and informative. Having grown up in the late 60's and 1970's I was familiar with some of the Lionel products that were offered in HO scale. Among those mentioned in your article, I did have the Lionel rotating search light. I also found the deal between Lionel and Tri-ang very interesting. Speaking of Tri-ang, there is another company with a fascinating history.

Recent posts make it obvious many of us have a soft spot in our hearts for those old kits. Wooden, cardboard, metal, or early plastic. They have a certain charm that never models can't capture. Post your own old favorites here.

Getting over the "blah" hump.

Wondering how fellow modelers get over the "blah" hump. I'm talking about just not having any interest in getting into the train room and working on projects. Here in Western Michigan it's the perfect time to dive into the hobby as the temps are hovering right around freezing. But I just can't seem to get excited about doing anything. So how does one get over that and get back to doing what we should be enjoying? MRH Editor, maybe a good topic for your monthly column?

Shinohara old turnout DCC friendly ??? Is this the good way to do it ???

Find so much discussion about how to make turnout DCC friendly and especially old Shinohara turnouts, I have modified this pictures as a basic schematic for gaps, jump wire , and powering of frog and points.

Just ask to know if it's a good schematic or if you have remarks because I would share this schematic for help on the forum.

Thanks for your remarks,

The picture of a Shinohara turnouts show how I think to do it.

Scale Sound in GP10s

I have two Iowa Interstate GP10s that will work my small branch line and I decided to have Scale Sound Systems install their acoustically designed speakers. For your listening pleasure here is a very short video. I'm certain the prime movers will sound even better in person.

Each engine has a different 16-cylinder 567 file and I'm told they sound great together.

The Chicago Central unit is for an eventual show module to be built later.

Building White Metal Model Vehicles

I'm looking for a video... and maybe someone here can help. (The Professor usually has information like this)

Anyway, I have a stack of white metal vehicle models... "Woodland Scenics", "Wheel Works", and the newest one I just got is a "Gould Fire Engine" wagon made by "Scale Structures Ltd." back in 1976 (according to the well yellowed instruction sheet)

Rivet Counting and Overall Quality

This subject came to mind recently as I have been working on a 3D print project for a group lately modeling a prototype structure to the 1/4" as accurately as possible in HO and N scales.

Why are so many modelers focused on rivet counting when it comes to railroad equipment/structures and then pass on so many other details, particularly with structures and scenery? I have requests to model HO and N scale padlocks for folks that don't even have scenery on their layouts.

“What will it be Mr. ?” Your weathering medium of choice

When it comes to weathering you have many flavors to choice from.  Oils, acrylics, powders, etc.

Normally, I use acrylics and weathering powders but have been impressed with the results you get from artist oils and will give this medium a try.

So, what is your weathering medium of choice?

Magnetization/Demagnetization of Tools

I have several tools (screwdrivers & tweezers) that have become magnetized and therefore screws, etc. will stick to them when I want them to stay where I placed them.  Anyone have a way to de-magnetize iron/steel tools?

Thanks,

Stephen
