Fun with Arduinos

Since I met a guy who works at Dell, who told me about such things as Raspberry Pi's and Arduino's, I've been learning and planning some fun projects for Arduinos on my layout. I'm beginning in my city (Philly) area and will try to implement some of the following ideas:

Signaling
Traffic Lights
Building Lighting
Highway Flashers

Later I might get into areas that other MR's are involved in such as
DCC control of trains and controlling switch machines

Time for a Change

After 9 years of building my layout with varying degrees of success along with several remakes I have decided to rip it out and deposit it into a rented dumpster. I have made so many mistakes that it is no longer recoverable.

DCC Installation Tip for easy troubleshooting...........

I recently installed DCC sound in an O scale NWSL 2-8-2T "Minaret" * which I had previously made modifications to the driveline as well as doing a complete paint job.  As I was doing the mods and paint I frequently checked the running characteristics by connecting leads to the motor with DC.  When I do any DCC install I always put plugs on the motor and track power leads alternating male and female plugs.  This way if I have any issues such as a short, I can unplug the decoder and convert the motor back to DC by plugging the red/black power pickup wires to the orang

Spectrum 4-8-2 Heavy Mtn locos - Adventures in wiring, DCC/Sound

I just fixed the photo links on this blog.  The GW loco wiring is really crazy so this thread is an important reference for anyone that wants to upgrade one to DCC.

I haven't worked much on the layout or the mine kit since retiring from the job a few weeks ago.  Spring cleaning, family and honey-do's have had most of my attention.  But I did make some interesting purchases.

Help with a DSX sound only decoder.

I have a Soundtraxx DSX decoder for a Pennsylvania K-4 that I am installing in the tender. This is a sound decoder only. I was under the impression that the auto-exhaust could be set with out using a cam. Can this be done or do I need to install a cam.

RS3-M

Pretty sure the answer to this question is "no", but I figured I'd throw it out there anyway.  Has any model loco manufacturer ever produced a DCC ready or equipped EMD variant of the RS3 with the GP9 long hood and all the various 567 accoutrements?

Thanks,

Jeff

EDIT: Should have mentioned that I'm looking for HO scale.  :o)

Sprog 2 or 3

Will a Sprog II have enough power to program a tsunami soundtraxx decoder like the kind that come with Athearn Genesis models?  Should I get the Sprog 3 instead?

Thanks
