S Scale SHS 2-8-0
I have an S Scale S helper 2-8-0 with the gear not engaging the drive wheels. I am in the process of disassembly which is not an easy task. I assume the drive gear is broken or cracked. Has anyone done this project? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Prototype switch has me stumped
Here's a picture of my great-great grandfather's lumber mill in Tacoma, circa 1880. As you can see, most if not all of the mill is on pilings. The points on the turnout in the foreground have me stumped. One appears to be outside and the other inside (in the normal position.) Did the mill use special wheel sets on its cars? Did the track crew screw up (and the mill never used the switch)?
If I model the mill I'll certainly use standard switches, but still... What's up?
Signaling & Computer Control
As I'm dismantling the current G&AM I'm also planning and preparing for the next layout. One of the features I want to have is signaling and the possibility to automatically control and run a number of trains from a PC. This post is not about the software side, I pretty much know what options I have. It's about the hardware for occupancy detection and such.
