DCC starter kit

Does anyone make a DCC complete starter kit?

Background info: my grandson and I are building the River Pass layout by Woodland Senics, this is my first build and I know nothing about DCC basics other than a few things I've read, Thanks in advance.

Scratch-Built signals

Alrighty, I'd like to scratch build my own PRR position light signals. The ones I see available are too bulky, and the shades are too stubby. I've always liked the sharp quality they had sticking through the target. My question comes down to material... I have access to a laser cutter, so I can get accurate cuts for everything, and etching capabilities. I was thinking 3-ply Bristol doused in superglue, task board, super thin plexiglass, or 1/64" wood. I feel like the bristol will be the best because of the thinness in relation to rigidity.

Atlas GP40-2 pre order

What are your thoughts on the new GP40-2 announced from Atlas? I'm thinking of reserving a pair of them. Are they good runners? It looks like they will have ESU decoders in them. What is the difference between Silver and Gold lines?

The Office Park zone gets lit up, and the crew gets busy with some operating sessions

I got inspired after reading a number of recent posts on LED layout lighting.  I spent several hours overcoming information overload on Amazon and eventually settled on a strip of 5000K SMD5050 LEDs.  Saturday morning the postman delivered the goodies and I got to work.

Next step - mountain building

Now that my coal tipple is built it is time for mountain building.  As I mentioned in a previous blog entry I am using mostly foam for landforms.  The major benefit is ease of planting trees which is especially important for Appalachia.  Just make a hole with an awl and plant a tree.  If it doesn't look good, then pull it out and move it or try another.  I spent hours playing around with trees in the finished areas to get them to my liking.

Four Locomotives Running.

So far I have managed to get four locomotives back together and weathered. All of them run. Each has some one at the controls. Left on the list is #1 and #8. I have to make handrails for #8. Winter has set in so I should be able to get back to my models now.

Until Next Time.
