Stonehammer branch line terminus

Today I built a little coal dump to take a break from laying track.

Sculpt a mold question

I just finished applying S. to fill a bunch of divots in my foam scenery base. Looked like cottage cheese on applying it; still looks the same once dry. Is thus the way it's supposed to look? _

Stein Jr's Website

Some time ago I had bookmarked the late Stein Jr.'s website - there were (are?) some great small layout designs on that site.  Looking for one of his track plans the other day, I noticed the link was broken.  A search of this forum and a Google search of the web doesn't seem to reveal the site location.  I suspect it has been taken down or closed since his passing.

Does anyone know if this wonderful site has been archived or hosted by someone else?  It would be terrible to lose such a wonderful resource!

Thanks!

Install a Reed Switch in a ScaleTrains reefer container w/ sound

The ScaleTrains reefer containers with sound are very nice units. Here is how I improved a little on the design by installing a magnetic reed switch inside the unit so that you don't have to pick up the unit from the train to turn it on or off.

ScaleTrains Sound Reefer Mod

I work at a Food distribution center in the midwest, and we get a wide range of Reefer containers and trailers. One thing I have to always watch for at work is a reefer unit with an "Alarm Light" on. While I couldnt find any prototype photos of container reefers showing the alarm light, I did include one in my video of a standard 53' reefer trailer, but basically the same thing.

Proto 2000 Heritage 2-8-8-2 shell/boiler removal?

I've got a P2k 2-8-8-2 that fried a decoder.  I suspect it's because the motor went wonky - I replaced the decoder and it does everything but move.  A little Googling seems to indicate that the brushes go bad, and it's a simple fix.

Except...

A little more Googling shows that I need to take the screw out from under the smokestack to get the boiler off so I can get to the brushes.  But there's no screw there on mine. (Mine is Item # 23333)  If it came with a parts sheet or instructions, they are long gone.

Metrolink's scenery + pre-built structures super-thread!

I've done a fair amount of research on scenery materials since I've re-entered the hobby, and would like to share what I've learned here, including where to buy basic scenery materials at the best prices. See the latest post on various plasters: What's in them? Coming soon: My mini-review of Siflor's Buffalo Grass pre-made grass tufts!

Video tutorial on waterfalls

Hi! :)

Waterfalls adds magic to every miniature landscape and diorama. I just had to try it out.

Need help

It's been ages since I wire up a layout. I got an idea how to create DC blocks on this, but would much appreciate any help in regards to where to put the electrical insulating gaps.

So far I think I should separate the runaround track into two blocks between the turnouts. The right side including half of the crossover
