Battery power and DCC

On the Millennials and model railroading thread, the discussion wandered off into the pros and cons of battery power.

Let's move that conversation here.

Modern BNSF operations paperwork (switchlists, manifests, etc)

Hi all,

I'm looking for examples of modern BNSF operations paperwork, such as switch lists, manifests, their version of a Form D, etc.

I'm using the JMRI Operations software and would like to format my paperwork in a similar way to the prototype.  I would also like to find out the paperwork involved if a local crew wants to switch a facility that requires occupying part of a main track (if that situation still exists) or if a maintenance of way team needs to occupy a section of track.

Removing loco windows

I would like to remove the windows and number boards on some locos for painting, but I always seem to break something when removing them. Any suggestions or advise for removal without breakage?

Thanks in advance.

Heat setting Walthers Goo

Hi All,

Is this similar to Pliobond in which it can be heat set?

SW1500 sideframes + motor work

Took apart one truck of the SW1500 cow and indeed the sideframes are cast with the number 70702 just like the sideframes of the unpowered loco.  The powered SW1500 sideframes have bronze wheel/axle bearings instead of the black plastic bearings on the unpowered sideframes.  Will remove the Ernst gearing and go back to the original stock Athearn gear set.  Next up is the motor.  Did not remove the flywheels as I was afraid that they might slip on the shaft after removing and replacing.  Cleaned the commutator with a fine flat small file and a pencil eraser + #11 blad

Show your grain elevators...

Hi everyone,

I plan on modeling a grain elevator in Kandiyohi, MN in HO and I was looking for some photographic inspiration and tips. Show me your elevators!

Please post the following:

  • Scale
  • Prototype or Freelance?
  • Kitbash or Scratchbuilt?
  • Components and manufacturers used?
  • Any additional construction techniques or recommendations?

I am particularly interested in photos and detail parts used. "Legs, distributors, conveyors, dryers, etc..."

FOAMboard varieties

I'm getting myself more confused by trying to nail down the differences in all of these foam-board varieties. Every time I think I have a handle on the subject I run into another discussion that expands on the many varieties that seem to be available.

Last night I ran across an ad on craigslist here in northern FL that spoke of some 1.5 inch 'fiber-faced' foam-board. It got me wondering what was meant by 'fiber-faced'?...what sort of fiber?....on one side or both?...etc.
