Weathering Wood (or Ties) using Dye and Alcohol
After searching across various sites about how to color or dye wood for a weathered look, I decided to do my own testing and post the results here complete with exact proportion details in case it would be helpful to others like me who were trying to do similar things.
For this test I used a full 32 oz bottle of 70% isopropyl alcohol mixed with 1 teaspoon of Fiebing's Black Leather Dye, in a cut open 1-gallon milk jug.

DC testing of DCC wired layout
I'm actually getting close to running some trains on the lower decks of my new layout,...lower main level & sub-level staging decks. I've wired it to be a DCC layout, but have NOT yet installed any of those DCC circuit boards.
My thoughts are to pre-test the layout with DC control,...to find any shorts, mis-wirings etc.
Can this be done? Can I just hook up a good DC power pack to my buss wiring??

Animated Chickens , motion activated
This video describes using a motion sensor to activate a display at a train show. The Northwestern Vermont Model Railroad Association also uses the modular display at an August fair. Members own their own modules.
Cattle
I'm not sure if this has been addressed before. We know that cattle were shipped from Texas to Kansas, etc. for processing and to Chicago for same. But for modeling TX, would that be "only" pens? Or would there be any other facility or structure built in TX for "other" than just storing cattle to ship North? For modeling in TX, wouldn't there be any processing? Why not? They wouldn't ship to KS for processing and then back to TX for grocery stores? Would they? Pictures would be nice - or a destination to search on Google Maps.

DC control
I need to know what value pot to use to control the DC voltage to my HO layout. I'm using and old transformer and know how to construct a bridge rectifier. Thanks in advance.

The Diesels are coming, the Diesels are coming.
In the mid-1970s Kennecott Bingham Canyon started testing diesel motive power at the mine, the old Electric motors had given them many years of great service, but now it was time to upgrade. Pictures from the Don Strack collection found at utahrails.net a special thanks to James Belmont for his wonderful pictures.

Display Cases Storage vs on the layout
