How do the electroluminescent (EL) displays work?

Some of you may be familiar with Miller Engineering animated signs; they use an electroluminescent (EL) display, controlled by a small board they provide and then typically powered by a 4.5 V DC power supply or 3xAAA batteries.

The board is called an inverted I believe, and it features an obvious transformer. When they run they make a typical high frequency noise.

Purely out of curiosity, I'm trying to figure what's the tech behind it, and I'm not finding much info.

Decoder Pro and ESU Loksound V5 Issues

I bought a Rapido SW1200. It has ESU Loksound V5 sound decoder installed. When I opened up Decoder Pro to change the address there are no options for the V5 decoder. It has options for V4 and earlier. Am I missing something?

Proto ties & flex track!

As I was working on ballast, etc. it occurred to me that flex track ties are too much alike. Yes, we can apply paint or pastels or such to change color. But proto ties are not that uniform in shape or texture. So - what I need to ask is for those of you that have done something to make flex track ties look more prototypical. What can we do? Has anyone tried scratching them with a steel brush? Or something like that? I'd hate to be the one experimenting? Hoping that someone has already done some finessing of ties. Saving me from ruining my ties. Is this clear?

Semi trucks/trailers of the late 70's and early 80's

I'm looking to model New England in the late 70's to early 80's, and I'm having a hard time finding information on what types of semi trucks and trailers would be appropriate for that era.

I know that trailer lengths were first mandated federally in 1983, when the maximum trailer length nationwide was set at 48', but I can't find a whole lot of information on trailer sizes prior to that.

how to prevent tape from pulling off flat painted roads

Hello fellow modelers,

I have a road that is dry wall mud covered, sanded and painted grey with flat acrylic . I need to know  the secret behind taping white traffic lines on the above without removing the grey road color.   Please let me know and thanx very much. Steve Klein

Track Shifter

We talk about and show you pictures of this unique track machine that was widely used at the mine. With miles of rail constantly on the move they needed a fast way to pick up the rail and move it closer to the level after each shovel pass.

Making your own colour correct Railroad Signal LED's...

So at the end of today's little experiment I've managed to get all three signal colours into seperate 0603 SMD LED's.  I couldn't find anywhere that offered single LED's that were the correct colours for use in HO scale.

Finishing the Art Deco Gas Station Convenience Store

With the structure complete, I put on the last of the details to finish the project.

Dream Shop ideas and tools.

I have been reworking my existing Workbench/Shop for the last couple weeks. (you may have seen a few posts about this regarding lighting, air supply and such).   And this got me wondering about what ideas folks would suggest if they were starting over or doing a dream shop.

In my case i am freshening up my shop and not so much starting over and i have a very tight budget but i figure i want to plan ahead a bit.  So any ideas of tgings i should leave space for in the future….
