Paradigm shifting sound speakers

I had the pleasure of attending an operating session at Jason Klocke's fantastic prototype CGW layout yesterday.

What made this op session particularly amazing (besides the use of two ProtoThrottles – shameless plug) is Jason has recently refit some of his locomotives with Scale Sound Systems speakers. www.scalesoundsystems.com

Headlight Responds, but Motor Does Not; a JMRI Operator Error

I just want to share this story in case somebody else runs into the same problem.  It involves a rather common annoyance of trying to select a loco on system, and finding that the headlights and direction toggle respond - but not the motor. I'll put the details in the first reply so the intro doesn't repeatedly use up a large amount of page space...

Electrical work for the swing gate track

I got most my wiring done on the swing gate so when it is open there isn’t any power on the gate and 18 inch’s of dead tracks off the gate. I wasn’t thinking about how many switch’s I required to do this when I was in the planning stages. As a result I currently only turn off the power on one end of the approach to the gate. I will purchase a couple more switches in the near future and complete the wiring.

An overdue session for Stonehammer

Brass Tracked Turnouts in Modern NS Layout

Brass Tracked Turnouts in Modern NS Layout

This may just be a hypothetical concept, but the thought came up today as I explored some of my numerous inventory of turnouts collected over the years. There are a number of nice quality, and like new condition brass turnouts of various varieties in that collection. Are they all destined to the trash heap, or can some of them be utilized??

DOMTAR Pulp and Paper Mill - Rolling Stock

Christmas is fast approaching and I've begun to make progress on the track work for the layout so I figured it was time to look in detail at rolling stock purchases.

First item:

I need a few sodium chlorate cars but I'm having a hard time finding the right kind of 2 bay covered hoppers online.

Does anyone know of a manufacturer that produces 2 bay covered hoppers with sealed bays for sodium chlorate?

Proto:48 - Why does it mean more than accurate trackwork and wheels?

I appreciated the recent article on super detailing a freight car.

But why has Proto:48 been associated with the super detailing of equipment?

Was it not meant to focus on accurate prototypical trackwork and wheel appearance?

Was the association of Proto:48 to super detailed equipment the original intention?

Does Proto:87 have the same association?

The freight car could have easily had standard wheels and still would have been a great looking model.
