The SP gods are smiling. . .

I just got an e-mail announcement from ExactRail.  They are coming out with a really SWEET Bay Window Caboose.

Ah - I miss the SP and the days of a caboose at the end of the train.

PS:  I don't work for ExactRail - so this is not a plug for them.

Hello everyone,

First time poster but train lover since for as long as I can remember! Newbie at train layout, but always dreamed of making my own.

Planning for the future... Occupancy Detection & Power Blocks

Great news today!  I sold my house (in only 3 weeks!)!  The planned moving date is September 30th, so I am planning on starting the new layout mid-October once we get settled at the new house.  I posted the first section of the plan about a week ago (here), and have made very minor changes, but it follows the prototype exactly, just compressed it a little.

The San Ramon Branch of the SP and other railroads of CCC

Thank you for reading this.  I thought that i would throw out what I think I know and let the more knowledgeable correct my misinformation and thereby coalesce a useful body of knowledge.  Hopefully I can edit this thing after posting.

Telephone poles part 2

Hey friends,

today I did the second line of poles on my layout.  Again, Rapido poles rebuild, with  a repainting and weathering. This time using Ez wire copper (brown) fine for the lower stringing and black fine on the upper.

Operating weigh scale

Not sure if this has been mentioned here already, but I had been clued in about this neat product - http://www.bouldercreekengineering.com/scale_ops.php - a while ago, but until now, I had no chance to actually see or use one, but that will change this weekend at a local op session by someone who just installed one on his layout. I thought that those of you out there who are interested in "enhanced" ops, might find it of interest.

Finishing the basement... Drywall or not??

I was reading Jason's construction blog and saw the discussion of drywalling the exterior walls of the future layout room.  I'd like your thoughts on what I was planning to do.

I'm in the process of purchasing a new house with an unfinished basement.  The basement is 19' x 51' and the current plan is to put the railroad all the way around the perimiter so there won't be any hidden track or steep grades, yet still allow for continuous running.

The plan for the room is this:
