To Model an HO Coal Dock - Kitbash Walthers Ore Dock, scratchbuild or wait and hope for manufacturer - WITH FOLLOW UP ?'s

With the Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale Ore Dock being discontinued at Walthers, and the availabilty for sale of this kit rapidly dwindling, I need to decide quickly whether to buy the Walthers HO Ore Dock or not to kitbash it into Coal dock.

Newbie Needs Guidance on Laying and Connecting Turnouts

I am in the process of designing and building my first HO layout in many years and am slowly learning how to solder track without destroying the ties, etc. Am building with atlas code 83 flextrack, atlas and walter/shinohara turnouts -- and have two questions about installing turnouts:

1. What is the preferred way to connect the turnout to the rest of the track? Should the rails be just connected with joiners? Soldered? With gaps to the track on either side? I have seen many comments about removing and reinstalling turnouts -- which might be tough if soldered in.

1 grade crossing that will be fully automated

I plan on to have  (for a start) only one fully automated grade crossing. I want to use the Walthers signals, can anyone suggest me what to use as for circuit board, optical detector, etc

I might also consider doing all my accessories on dc, with a separate power pack, is this a good idea?

I am in DCC  as for track and locos

The PWRR - EBT Update 2

I've completed the foundry using the same techniques as before.

Next building will be the Pattern Storage Room

Help!!! Selective Compression/How big should a "city" be???

Someone please help me!  I've posted that I'm about to get a new and large modeling area in my new home.  The basement is 19' x 51'.  I'm planning on putting the layout all the way around the perimeter (shelf style) for continuous running, but the sceniced area of the layout is roughly 19' x 35' in a U shape.  This is a very large amount of space, why does it seem so small???  I would like to incorporate three cities into the layout and have some green space between them.

Finally - Video of the Utah Belt. . .

I ran across this Tracks Ahead video on youtube.  It contains about 5 minutes of Utah Belt video.  The Utah Belt section starts at 8 minutes into the video.

Enjoy!
